My ex-FWB actually said that I became “mean” after I started reading the Gender Critical subreddit. Whilst I don’t agree with everything that sub says, it was the first time I saw a place on Reddit actively encourage women to put themselves first. Notice how me not catering to his whims (he wanted me to have an abortion, but I was unsure, but that’s a whole different story), meant I became “mean”.

Not only that, but putting your needs above his own as well. They get really upset when you think about your priorities first and only secondly about his.

It is really important for them that you must always agree with what they say. You disagreeing hurts them inside on a personal level.

It's messed up, but that's really how narcissists think about you. They also abuse you as a way of keeping you under their control. And if you do manage to break free, they see it as a betrayal because of their entitlement issues.

My ex husband became physically abusive towards the end of our marriage. He got drunk one night and tried to take my wallet to go get more beer, i tried to take it away and he hit me in the face like 10-15 times. Then the cops came and took him. He went to jail for 6 months. He constantly brings it up as something evil I did to him: "YOU put me in jail!" Meanwhile, I pleaded to the judge not to give him any time

My abusive ex-boyfriend, who would regularly put his hand on my throat, say "I'm going to get a gun" to scare me, and wake me up in the middle of the night to force me to hold his balls while he jacked off, among other things, said "You've been nothing but a complete bitch to me" after I escaped from him, and I'll never forget it. No one else to my knowledge has ever called me that in my life.

i really appreciate this sub. a few days ago i finally stood up to my abusive ex and told him i wouldn’t let him hurt me any more. he’s 34 i’m 19. if it wasn’t for this group i don’t think i would have ever stood up to him. :)

Yes, and when I finally asserted myself and called out my LVM ex of 7 years (shame it took me that long) for his emotional abuse and manipulation through the years, he just looked at me and said "you're not the woman I used to know," and "I'm not sure I like this new you." Never felt more free than after I broke up with him.

This makes so much sense now. I never understood why my ex would state that I was screaming at him or fighting with him when I asked him to acknowledge that he hurt me and apologize. I just thought he was lying so I would feel bad and not bother him.
