A big example of this is Xanthippe. (Wife of Socrates)
She's described as a bad woman who even threw a bucket of urine at poor Socrates once.
What they 'forgot' to tell you is that Xanthippe was only 12-13 when she was married to Socrates, who was probably 50-55 if not older.
She was raped by him and had 3 kids with him, she was a woman at Athens, she had absolutely no rights. No voice. She wasn't even allowed to walk outside unless one of her sons was old enough to accompany her. Socrates didn't work or was home at all, he was out "lecturing" all day with his buddies and had no money.
Why would a child -A literal child-, have any sympathy for her rapist, who was probably as misogynistic as every other man in ancient Athens? Why would she respect or love him? She's described as an evil woman, all I see is a child who tried to survive and raise and protect her kids the best she could at a time and place where everyone and everything was against her.

Wow, I didn’t know about this. I petition to change his name to Scroterates.

I actually thought 'scrotes' was short for Socrates cause he's the biggest LVM I can think about 😂😂

Your comment gave me a weird idea. I suddenly wish there's a library somewhere (physical or online) that has all the historical accounts of the wives/ mothers/ daughters of all these historical figures. I'm not sure for what yet and I don't mean to diminish their contributions to humanity and civilization, but I feel like we were never taught about the women figures in their lives. Despite the common wisdom is that when you're married, you're essentially one with your spouse somehow only the men get to register their names for their inventions?

That sounds like a great idea. You could start with Tolstoy's wife who had 12 children over her lifetime and edited all of Tolstoy's books, as well as Anna Kareina possibly being her work (mostly).
Also Einsteins's first wife was a math whiz that apparently contributed greatly to his work.
ETA Tolstoy was broke af most of his life, too.

The more things change...
Google the story of Mary Lumpkin. 150 years ago, she was sold to a Virginia slave trader who used her as a sex slave. She had her first child by him at 13.
She ended up having 5 kids and through a crazy set of circumstances ended up "inheriting" her captor's property: a notorious slave prison known at the time as "The Devil's Half Acre."

This was only 150 years ago. A drop in the bucket in the timeline of history.

I keep thinking about how a catchy term people like to describe some women who won't put up with BS as "jaded". Or maybe they're not jaded rather reality has made them a bit more pessimistic about people's intentions not being as pure as they use to think they were. Time and time again, people seem to be let downs. It's amazing how rare it is I seem to meet people that have basic decency and common sense.

of course they are mad at the scrotes, b/c the scrotes are garbage who want to take advantage of them and abuse them.

Can confirm: Stuck in a LV relationship right now. Have been told I think too much and that I’m “lippy”. I’m furious. And I AM going mad. But not by default.. hmm.
