It's manipulative when purposefully absent fathers feign sadness and grief over not being with their child.
When I was a teenager I used to watch my dad use false victimhood to groom otherwise confident women into becoming anxious. His favorite tool was the parent card. He'd yell and do all of these things to prove he was "trying so hard!". And the woman would be there soothing him in his time of anger🙄🙄.... After this he'd explain why he hasn't spoken to his children in 7 years!!!!!!!!!!! Sis, like WHAT???

My dad continuously fucked with my brother and I for years, lied to us about our mom doing stuff and making her look bad. My mom and dad had "agreed" not to tell us about my fathers serial infidelity because my mom was worried it would affect our relationship with him. My dad, playing the fucking victim, agreed to that for about 30 seconds, then first chance started telling us our mom was the one who cheated. That was bullshit. The full story is, she began dating again after finding out about our dads MANY sexcapades.
My mom didnt know for a long time. It ended up really seriously fucking up my brother who was confused for years and took so much anger out on our mom. He is a 30 year old man, and finally has admitted to me the other day that "you know, I think women do kinda suffer at a greater rate than men, they're definitely not riding dick and peoples wallets, like I thought. And when it comes to work they get treated kinda badly, and expectations at home are usually much worse on the whole for women..."
I mean i was so happy he finally got his head out of his ass, but he had a mother and a sister who were CONSTANT living breathing examples of the dynamic, and he didnt believe us for 20-something fucking years...!

My dad also tried to lie his way out of taking responsibility for his mistakes. I remember when I was little he would do the absolute minimum or even forget to take care of me and my brother when we were little. Do stuff like forgetting about us in a hot car while he was inside taking a nap. He also had several girlfriends outside of my moms marriage that would call the house asking for him. Knocked my mom’s front tooth out when he got mad. Called her fat while she was pregnant. Of course this all never happened according to him. My mom is just a crazy woman lying and using him for child support money. He still parade us around his friends and tells them how proud he is of us. 🙄

Holy shit same same, but different. My dad was "watching" (he was reading the paper) my brother and I swim and I started struggling and about to drown. My brother, with no prior experience other than good instincts, noticed this and dragged me to the edge of the pool. I was 4, he was 8, and neither of us could swim well in deep water.
My mom came out, and told my dad to keep an eye on us. He waved her off, she went back inside to talk to her friend, and my dad immediately resumed reading the paper. I again started struggling in the deep water and my brother saved me again. My mom came out LIVID and dressed my dad down for basically almost letting me drown again.
Of course, shes just a crazy bitch and hes a perfect father, and a victim of being married to such a crazy bitch who divorced him when he cheated on her.

It's hard because I've actually met two men who are hvm and legitimately one had an ex who was neglecting their kid (he had majority care, to be fair they were very young and she wasn't coping with the transition into Parenthood, she ended up disappearing for a while to go to festivals instead of being with her kid) and the other's ex had npd.
But as a general rule I never just take their word. As a single mum it's really hard to think about dating a single dad because Im always questioning did they cheat? Are they abusive? Eg I met one guy on a dating app and got talking to him and then he said he was going to some group thing that was telling him to go out into nature and practice mindfulness to calm down and alarm bells went off for anger Management course.

Real shit. My Dad pulled this on his third wife. He was drunk and armed and went banging on the door of her new bf's house. Once he was let in, he stopped asking about his child and started asking where to find the new bf and going throughout the house looking for him and threatening to kill him. Luckily, new bf had his own gun. It went through my dad's shoulder. New bf stopped the bleeding til the ambulance arrived. I went to new bf's house to pick up my dad's truck and told him to his face I didn't blame him for what he did. I always thought he 100% deserved what he got, but he spent the rest of his life angry that the bf shot him and angry that he never got "justice". His wife went back to him right after that, but when he died she wasted absolutely zero time getting remarried to an old high school flame. And I'm happy for her. We send each other cards and visit once a year.
