The comments under that article from men are a dumpster fire. Then there’s this embodiment of internalised misogyny;

Truth has become whatever you want it to be

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/b33046aa-873e-11eb-8b38-e2425c3b9f1b?shareToken=4df6c44f75b3e1306629372c0effade9

Basically she refuted the 97% of all women have faced sexual harassment stat, because she dug deep and found a survey where 50% (still an abhorrently high number but go with me here) of women had experienced sexual harassment. Leading her to declare it’s all made up to demonise men.

Plot twist though, the poll she picked had a crucial choice of question ‘have you ever experienced these types of harassment from A MAN YOU DON’T KNOW!!

It conveniently ignores that in 90% of rapes, the attacker is known to the woman, any harassment, unwanted attention, and being physically attacked and murdered is OVERWHELMINGLY by their MALE friend, partner or ex.

So yeah, if I asked how many people had hugged a stranger compared to someone they knew, focusing on only the amount of strangers you hug is blatantly going to make it look like it’s a smaller problem, that hugging isn’t an everyday issue, but it is, and hiding facts helps no one other than her piss poor attempt at point making.

As a women, to cherry pick like that and pander to the NAM camp, to throw the good work of millions of women under the bus who are trying to change this, is the exact reason women do not report these things to the police, who would believe them when they’re being accused of making it up even by other women.

Joanna Williams is a disgrace.

The linked article reminds me of the Nicola Thompson interview on Good Morning Britain (I think) where she said all men have missed an opportunity to call out misogyny or harrassment against women. The male host was triggered and basically started his "NoT aLl MeN" spiel. He totally missed the point though, because he had a preconceived idea in his head about what that looks like. How many times has he heard a story from a friend that sounded questionable and though "yeah but my friend is harmless...he wouldn't hurt anyone!" That's a missed opportunity to call someone out. Has he ever seen a man leading a sloppy-drunk woman out of a pub and thought "glad her boyfriend's getting her home!" without asking questions? Missed opportunity. What about the guy he notices on the train home from work that keeps trying to get some woman's attention and won't take no for an answer? That's another missed opportunity.

All these men are grandstanding about "how do we make women feel safe?", but they're not willing to do the actual work: looking at their own internal biases and educating themselves on what harrassment and crimes against women look like. Lecturing women on how not all men are like that does NOT help. If a cat scratches and hisses at me when I try to pet it, the cat isn't going to care if I tell him that not all humans are bad and he should purr for me and let me pet him because I'm a nice human who likes cats.

Everyone, male female and everything in between have missed an opportunity to call out misogyny, everyone of us, me, you, everyone. No one needs to be defensive about this. We just need to become more aware about the topic, in order to call out misogyny more frequently. These men (and women) need to get over their hurt feelings.

These men (and women) need to get over their hurt feelings.

They're fucking morons. When I go to an airport and have to go through security/get stopped and searched, do I throw a tantrum and accuse the airport security of treating me like a terrorist and then furiously tweet #notalltourists?

Of course I don't. Because I'm a functioning adult with a basic sense of empathy and understand that people's collective safety is more important than my feelings or ego, or even my convenience.

Male lurkers, read that again: people's (women's) collective safety is more important than your ego. Your feelings are not more important. Your convenience is not more important. Your social image is not more important. Now sit the fuck down and get over yourselves.

Definitely...and missing an opportunity means it's a learning opportunity. I'm still discovering biases I didn't even know I had.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Perfectly put.

That cat analogy is amazing, and I shall be stealing it 😁

But you hit the nail on the head, men aren’t willing to put in the work, and I would bet most men have seen a friend do something questionable, but shrugged it off as ‘not their place’. They didn’t do it, so they’re still a good person, so why are women complaining?! It drives me mad and it’s exhausting because they don’t recognise how big of a problem their inaction is, or if they do, they don’t care because it’s not happening to them.

We seem to have regressed to a point in society where individualism reigns supreme, where if ‘I’m alright’ that’s where the line is drawn, there’s no critical thinking or inward reflection. This is the exact reaction these types of guy gave at the focus on racism in the UK, they’re not racist, they probably won’t call their friend out for a racist joke, but THEY didn’t say it, so they get offended at being assumed to be racist. Well if you’re not a part of the solution, you’re complicit in the problem.

And I know I should expect it, but when a women joins the “NoTaLlMeN” camp, because that female voice will be given more focus, because it’s saying what a man wants to hear and I really worry that nothing will change, and it breaks my heart.

I mean, it is the same with bullying at school, or with some crimes: bystanders aren't innocent.

[–]Lazy-Design1979FDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah it's sad...it's like there's no social accountability anymore. Even if someone's afraid of confrontation (like me) there are so many ways to report someone anonymously, or do it in a way that isn't in their face. As long as they're not like that, they don't care if someone they know is.

[–]IndividualRoutine661FDS Newbie 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Agreed.

I couldn’t read the comments I’m not feeling strong enough

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was on my war horse doing my best to call these men out in the comments of all these types of articles to begin with, but I’m exhausted, I’m exhausted with the false cry of MiSaNdRY and them just missing the point or choosing to ignore it.

The sisters that came before us and the ones that are fighting now and never let up are amazing women, to have the strength not to get lost in how hopeless it may seem, they truly are queens.

[–]IndividualRoutine661FDS Newbie 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah handmaiden central in the comments, I expect men to be worthless rape apologists but women doing it too makes me feel despair. The very definition of the patriarchy in action.

What took so long 😩

[–]IndividualRoutine661FDS Newbie 36 points37 points38 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Joanna Williams is the worst kind of handmaiden and dollars to donuts that study where “only “ 52% of women were harassed was flawed by biased questioning and cherry picking the respondents.

Johnson himself is demonstrably a weapons grade misogynist and extremely LVM so I don’t hold out any real hope for action from this dreadful government.

Finally. This needs to be classified as a hate crime everywhere. Gender based violence is hatred. It's been legal for far too long.

Don’t really agree with the flavour of the headline but there we are.

Thank you. 😊

No problem 😁

This won’t change anything under Tory government unfortunately. Their policies revolve entirely around profit and spending government money prosecuting men who commit misogyny would be very draining to the state indeed.
