It isn't very good. Yay costumes and diverse casting but this ugly dude is gonna rape the lead and a 75 pound girl punched him out. Woke. Nevermind she is going right back on the meat market and mom is talking her into how happy she will be with kids. The girls have zero sex ed but corsets right? A boy who fucks and ducks a singer is telling that same mom what he is and is gonna do. The lead love interest had a tragic backstory but he also fucks and ducks poorer women and is mean to the lead female interest. She is now about to marry the ugly rapist and you know she is gonna get out of it but it is gonna be because the ab having duke decided to be human but not human enough to leave the whole meat market scene.

I wish people would stop quoting from this show. As soon as it became clear that the main girl was going to do what she did, I stopped watching it, but all the usual romance pickme tropes were obvious even before then. I guess I was hoping the show wouldn't do what I knew it was going to do, which is a feeling that's giving me flashbacks.

The minor feminist dialogues were all just misdirection for the main pickme messages. Heal that damaged man with your love! Don't believe what he's telling you, you can change his mind! A woman can't be happy without a man, not even if she's the thick token feminist who's secretly a genius writer! And an older woman might be a bitch, a nag, or a queen bee, but don't forget: She's there to berate and manipulate men into doing her bidding.

Hey, does anyone want to talk about Delhi Crime? Or The Dead Lands? Or The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? Or The Slap? Or I'm Your Woman?

Yes! Friends with Benefits was on tv yesterday and it was the most insulting cringe fest. Amazing how FDS has completely changed my view on what’s watchable!

I don't know, I think there are some decent FDS themes... I'm only on the 3rd episode right now so I have no idea what the ultimate conclusion will be, but the subplot with Marina Thompson, the cousin that gets pregnant, it feels like a warning tale to a) not have sex with a man before commitment and b) not simply assume he will commit to you, and to plan practically. It feels like a warning tale about the nature of men - I also feel like the over protectiveness of the eldest Bridgerton brother is a classic 'men telling on themselves' situation - he is so wary of men because he knows how bad they can be, as he himself is so bad by sleeping with the opera singer but having no intention in marrying her.

I'll update further on but I think it is actually FDS in the same was as, say, Pride and Prejudice is - the messaging is that men can destroy women, and so women have to be extraordinarily careful not to tie themselves to the wrong one. It isn't romanticised in this idea that love can conquer all. I guess we shall see!!

Yeah it was trash. A lot of my friends were lapping it up and cooing over it. Yes Simon is hot- but isn’t it really sad that Daphne has 0 clue about anything. Also she looked 13.5 I was shocked that she is in her 20s! Not sure if that was intention- NOT bashing her looks was just uncomfortable watching it because she looks and acts so wide-eyed and childishly confused about sex and marriage.
