This is really sad and scary, and it hits home for me.

For over a year, I have struggled with being harassed by an older maintenance man who works in the same office building as me. I'm essentially a lone worker because of the pandemic - most of my colleagues work from home. This has given him plenty of opportunity to harass me. There are so few people around that there is no social deterrent, and worst of all, I have very few witnesses.

He hasn't touched me or spoke to me. But he stares at me like a predator. He goes out of his way to keep me in his sights.

I had to wait for months until I had a decent witness before I complained about him, and he stopped for a while. Obviously he started again. I complained immediately. I've faced accusations that it's really me that's staring at him. I've faced accusations that I'm overreacting because of my pre-existing poor mental health. I've been told that me complaining about him is putting his job at risk. I've been told that it's affecting his marriage. It's been implied that he's so upset that he might either confront me or harm himself.

The burden has been unfairly put on me. The people in place to help aren't doing their job properly.

He's still in the same building but with heavily restricted access. This restricted access actually makes it more likely that I will bump into him in the common areas of the building.

It's going to happen again. Management just don't want to deal with it. All I can do is keep heavily advocating for myself. Cause as much fuss as possible. I've got the union involved which has my management worried (which is a good thing). I'm in the office with my head held high, I've told as many colleagues as possible so I know they are looking out for me.

EDIT - as soon as I posted this comment, I had an epiphany. I haven't done everything I can do. I've reached out to a local women's charity with a focus on stalking who have helped me incredibly. I can't put down the details here, but I've definitely got things in motion for what will ACTUALLY help me, rather than allowing management to bury this. Thanks FDS!

I think her family should sue the building for even having a “master key” policy. How obtuse and fucking goofy. None of these donkey-ass demons should ever been given the slightest opportunity or opening to have that kind of access to a woman’s fucking apartment. I don’t care what the job is!!

She's just 19 years old. That man was 27. I wish I could feel hope that things are going to change. George Floyd's murder made racists show fake concern for a few months and then it was business as usual. I don't think all the missing/murdered women will put a stop to the misogyny.

Yes, I read about her in the news today. Here's an NBC article. It's so sad. She's a college student, young, gorgeous, with her whole life ahead of her. She was last seen in her apartment, where she was suppose to be safe. Ughhh. He did something horrible; I just know it. Please protect yourself. Live with roommates or get a big protective dog. My big momma pitbull mix who is super protective of me and hates men (more like she's scared of men and so she sees them as threats and goes into full-on protection mode) makes me feel very safe.
