The story is cute but the relationship was terrible. We were stuck in an elevator together during a blackout and to wait for the fire department to hammer through the wall between floors and pull us out. I was seeing someone at the time and he was married. We ran into each other a few years later at a bar randomly. But this time I was single and he had gotten divorced. For a long time I considered him The One/The One That Got Away but now I realize he was just another fuckboi.

Just to start discussion, I have a girlfriend who went to HS with a guy. They were in different years, but they knew of each other. He never approached her, however they both thought the other was attractive. Fast forward a few years and they reconnect at an event through mutual friends. They get talking and eventually start dating. Within a year they are engaged and really happy. They have a lot in common culturally and in terms of hobbies and mindsets. He is incredibly generous and supportive of her and her career even moving across the world so she can pursue a masters degree abroad. However, he didn’t make a move on her when they first met, it only grew after a few years.

However I also know someone who got together will a colleague. They had worked for the same company but didn’t date thinking it was not appropriate. Fast forward, the guy ended up being promoted and changed workplaces. They reconnected at a conference and got together. However, she had overestimated his interest in her - she thought that he had actually cared and the only thing stopping their love was their workplace. Turns out, he only liked her because she was his ‘work wife’. They had chemistry but only because they spent so much time together working. They realized they had nothing in common besides having had worked for the same company and broke up.

I once sort of dated someone in college who I knew from middle school. He was sweet, handsome, smart, and a great friend with whom I had things in common. However, the romance was... underwhelming at the time. Who knows, if I didn't have a bunch of other interests in between I may have felt differently. He was also a bit younger than me, so that threw me off. In college, a small gap can feel big tbh.

Edit for more context: we were both kind of socially awkward at the time being pretty young and mostly inexperienced, but we knew each other's exes and stuff. Knowing all of that didn't help.

I dated a man I went to high school with 25 years ago. I barely knew him since he was a grade below me but I always remembered him as a genuinely sweet guy.

It was a love affair for a couple months until red flags started popping up everywhere. Just too many and around that time I found this sub and broke it off before quarantine. I was definitely in love with the We weNt to High ScHoOl toGether 25 YeaRs ago fantasy...damn.

I met my boyfriend three years ago when I sat next to him in a two-day class we attended. I didn’t talk to him very much, though I saw him watching a show on his phone during break and I told him how much I love that show. I thought he was really cute but out of my league. I know now there’s no such thing as “leagues” but I was still an uninformed pickme back then, in fact I was just beginning the process of starting to break up with my then-boyfriend...a long drawn out breakup that took almost two years to finally make a clean break.

Anyway, I would see him around occasionally (we work for the same company but not around each other) and I’d say hi, but that was it. Well a little over a year after the class, I got a new position in the company and started seeing him more often (but still not really working together). We started flirting with each other quite a bit. And around a year after that we started dating. So far, so good but it’s only been six months so far.

I've known a few people who had good relationships with old classmates 3-4 years after graduation. They didn't really have a friendship or a relationship in high school, just knew each other.

Both seemed like good quality relationships (not that that happens in every case)

Yes, we met when we were both dating other people, became facebook friends (in the era when facebook was new and you added everyone you met) but never spent time any time together.

Started chatting some 5+ years later as we had similar interests, we would share articles and comments on each other's pages, met up in person some 6 months or so later .... and now we're married.

Hmmm it didn’t go well. We knew each other very casually, had maybe spoken a few times max. He sent me a DM but I never saw it until like a year later cause of a filter. So when I finally reply, he asks me to meet up to talk about the charity we met at and I had since left. We had amazing “chemistry” and shut down restaurants and with our long conversations for like a year. During this time he gets a gf. I didn’t know yet that men don’t see women as people, let alone friends. So I thought we were friends. Never ever was he inappropriate or did I get a romantic vibe from him. Not once. There was no way he liked me, I Knew so. I was wrong.

One day during a serious convo, I asked him how he was able to bounce back from ending a LTR engagement with his ex and gain confidence to date again, since I hadn’t dated for a few years since I left my abusive ex. Well, that’s when he told me that if he was single “I’d be in big trouble” meaning he’d try and get with me, I guess. I was freaking out because it almost like a female friend that you care for very much suddenly telling you that during a serious conversation and you don’t know what to say. So I told him I felt kinda dizzy, cause I did. And he took that as me like fainting over how turned on he made me or something lol. Suddenly, within the next few weeks, he “breaks up” with his gf and basically tells me he’s liked me since the day we met which was years prior. He went on and on and he told me all these loving things about how he sees me for an hour on the phone. He was like (calmly) “can’t you see what I’m trying to tell you?” kinda thing and tbh even though I wasn’t sure how I felt, what he was doing felt really romantic, like grab you by the collar and “shake some sense into you- I love you, you idiot!” kinda movie thing and I was pleasantly stunned. Then I get weak one day and after something unrelated and really bad happened to me, I told him about it and I took him up on his offer to “hold me.” Well, you can guess how that turned out. I still didn’t think he was going to make a move up until he was actually doing it- that’s how non-sexual this guy seemed to me (and others- people who knew him too later told me they couldn’t imagine him hitting on anyone at all). Long story long, THE NEXT DAY he tells me he’s back with his ex. Yikes. I was so hurt. Sorry I know you didn’t ask for this long story lol. Long story long I stopped talking to him, he contacted me like a year later to tell me how sorry he was and if he could be in my life “in any capacity but if not, just letting [him] say this apology was more than enough.” I wrote paragraphs back explaining how much he sucked and he agreed with it all. We talked on the phone for like 3 hours. Then a few weeks later he asks to meet and then an hour before I was going to leave to drive there he says nevermind but “maybe we can meet sometime in the future” so I told him to eff off and blocked him again.

I've gone on dates with 2 guys I knew from the past through mutual friends. I met them while I was dating other people.

Both were pleasant enough experiences but I didn't really feel a spark with either. It felt more like hanging with a friend and I didn't really get excited when we kissed.
