Hi everyone, I have been a long time lurker in this sub and as my SO is also active on reddit so using a throwaway, I don't want him to find out that I posted the following on reddit.
To start off, my boyfriend(X) and I have been dating for 2 years, right out of college in a fairly expensive town. We knew each other from college, but didn't start dating until we started working. I believe he really is a HVM, once i mentioned in passing about a necklace when we went shopping, and few months after that he got me the same one. I know he must have saved for 4 months to buy me that necklace, and he also has clear goals of what to do in life and is unbelievably smart. Here where the problem comes in.
We were talking about kids and marriage few days back, and in the conversation he said that "I think you can get a maternity leave of 6-9 months, it shouldn't be a problem". I pushed him to explain further, he said that he expects me to work after we have kids. I mean, I do want to work after having kids but not immediately, maybe when my kids are old enough. He says that his retired parents can take care of our kids while we work, and it wouldn't be a problem for them. To his support, he grew up in a family where they lived pay-check to pay-check, and he saw some hard times. So, he always had a conservative view of money. I tried to talk with him that I wont be working after having kids, he got upset saying that he always thought this would be the way.
He does have good points regarding increase in costs when we have kids, the cost of our parents in old age. He said that he alone could not make enough money for us to live in the same conditions we are living now. We work in the same field and make similar amounts, but as I am a strong believer in one of the parents living with the kids, I don't see how this is going to work out.
I believe that these are my standards and don't want to reduce my standards for someone. How should i convey that this will be a deal-breaker for me, and am I over-reacting by keeping some extreme choices in my preferences?
He really is the sweetest guy and makes me feel happy and comfortable, but this definitely is making me question my choices.
EDIT #1: Grammar changes
Update #1: Thanks for all the guidance. I have talked with my boyfriend regarding the points raised. He understood a lot of my inputs but questioned me on one. I said that once we have kids, I will have to do work after my office job and he will be lounging in the sofa. He said that the reason he wanted both of us to work is that we can leave our respective jobs early and spend time with the kids and do dates like we are doing now. He wanted to be there for the kids, which he never had as his father worked very late nights to keep food on the table. He wants us both to work so that our standard-of-living might not be reduced, and we will be able to spend time with the kids too.
I thought that it is good behaviour, but I don't think I would be able to sacrifice my preferences. It's always sad when people break up because of few compatibility issues. I am still debating, but as I learnt from this sub, I don't want to sacrifice my preferences, so I think I will have to get out of this.
I'm really heartbroken about the step I might have to take in coming days. But I know that you goddesses will be there by my side to push me up.
Update #2: I tried commenting on the replies, but since I have negative comment karma, they have been removed. Anyway, thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction. I will try to give an update in a few weeks.
