Pretty much what the title says. I've been discovering this problem lately as I've been exploring OLD and have noticed that men are very, very interested. And yet something about their interest puts me off, and I seem to only ever be into men who are unavailable to me, maybe because of the excitement of the highs and lows, the unpredictability. It feels like I'm being challenged. I obviously know this isn't good but I'm not sure how to help it.

I should say that I have pretty much no experience of an actual loving relationship, but have had a lot of casual sex in the past and FWB situationships. And I find I'm just way more comfortable in that terrain overall. Like I just know how to manage men who really only want sex because I know what to expect, it's not a "risk" for me. Once the possibility of vulnerability and feelings comes into play my instinct is to nope out of there.

I feel that in trying to protect myself from being hurt by men I have just closed myself off emotionally. When I'm with a man who is very obviously into me I feel uncomfortable, and I usually do not feel sexual attraction towards him or lose it fast. I find myself longing for the thrill I've felt with FWBs in the past instead. It feels like moving forward with this person would entail forcing myself into something that wouldn't satisfy me and I'd probably end it fast.

Btw, I do talk to my therapist about this. I'm not sure I feel like this is the right time for me to begin a relationship or not, but I'm testing the waters, I guess? I don't have any qualms about cutting men loose at the slightest sign of bullshit because I am very good at being distant. I'm just unsure whether I'm cutting people off because they actually don't interest me or because I'm just emotionally closed off and wary of intimacy.

Has anyone else felt like this? How do you balance protecting your heart with not turning into a robot?
