The last time I wrote a race related piece here a member of this community went into my DMs to challenge me and taunt me, stating that black people are not unfairly targeted by police, that we create our own problems, etc. That being said, I need to express this. I find it in poor taste that some of us want to create a hypothetical situation where if Gabbi was a POC, she could have been saved because how poorly treated we are treated in this country. I completely understand the desire to want to understand why this happened, but I believe that it doesn’t have to be done at the expense of WOC. It’s hard enough to watch other women use their privilege and uphold the systems of white supremacy to get ahead in life or negotiate for their own safety. Many of the women who are upset about what happened to Gabbi voted fo Trump, who was clearly a racist. Many of them have voted for a pedophile to take a position of power, and it was black women who kept him from it. It’s extremely painful to see not one murdered or missing black woman given any hardly media attention. Knowing that being educated or wealthy does not guarantee that I walk out of a hospital after having a child is extremely depressing. If Gabbi was a POC, the most likely outcome of her being arrested would be for her abuser to post her bail and manipulate her into staying in the relationship by telling her he’d drop the charges. He’d weaponize her fear of being black or brown in America, because it’s hard enough for a POC without a criminal record.That’s what would happen. If you want to believe she’d be safe, you have every right to believe that, but openly implying that racism would save her life is just extremely insensitive to all of us that have always been asked to fight for feminism, even though we were never included in it.
