This shit just happened to me in the store. Dude was old enough to be my dad. He felt it really important to leer and tell me, "god damn, you are hot." I was even wearing what I call my invisibility cloak. It's my oversized shapeless cardigan. The antithesis of sexy. I'm so over it. Makes me feel so unsafe. I ended up forgetting half of the stuff I was there for because I was so flustered.

I just want to exist. Why is that so much to ask?

Yes I don't dare go out alone a lot of the time. I was abducted by a paedophile when I was 10 years old. The sick bastard must have been late 40s to late 50s. On another occasion I was raped by a teenage boy. A year ago a man followed me out of the supermarket to my car. He tried to get me to unwind my window to tell him the time, when I refuse he gets out his phone and makes a call! I'm also tiny and don't weigh much. Do tall women get physically assaulted just as much? I get picked on by men a lot. From men invading my space in supermarkets to outright assault.

I find wearing my glasses means I'll never ever get hit on, followed or creeped on. No matter what I'm wearing. No one will flirt with me because the glasses turn you into some sort of caricature of a nerd or "difficult" woman that is never sexualized enough to attempt a conversation with.

I wore my contacts to the mall last week in jeans and a t shirt and a man literally stopped me in my brisk walking to deliver a cheesy pick up line. Just one of many differences between places I go to all of the time in glasses and a "hotter" outfit.

Lived in my city's gaybourhood for ages. It was fucking glorious. Wear what you want! Go for a walk alone at any hour! Can accept a compliment because it actually means something! Can give a compliment because he knows it doesn't mean "let's fuck"!

It's been gentrified/straightened and now feels as unsafe as any other. Walking on eggshells here. :(

I agree. I used to live by a beautiful urban lake. Gorgeous. I loved spending time there. One day as I was walking around with headphones specifically so no guy would approach me a guy approached me and I said “sorry I’m listening to music” and kept walking. He turned around and changed directions asking me questions about myself. It was so scary. Broad daylight in a populated place but no one happened to be around us. It ruined living next to a lake in an apartment I paid for specifically to go to the lake all the time. I know men would be infuriated that a guy “just trying to talk to me” would make me afraid but that’s my experience 🤷‍♀️

I spent years isolated at home due to a predatory man who decided to take it upon himself to stalk me and break into my home.

Even though I’m back to my old self (well looking even better) and out and about, I try to avoid all men as much as possible. I have had them still coming up to me in the middle is shops to bug me when I have had headphones in.

I even had one try to take my headphones out while I was grocery shopping and I reactionary moved and hit him in the face with a can I was looking at and ran. Thank god the cameras showed him touching me first.

Men really have no boundaries, they are depraved and have no idea what it’s like to be almost hunted like women are now.

Yesterday I was walking home from the store and this guy in his car turns around and makes a u turn into the empty clinic parking lot. Then he stops at the stop sign to try to talk to me. My instincts activated quickly and I walked behind the car, I guess he thought I was going to wait for him to go

It was scary as hell. Wonder if I decided to walk into the clinic parking lot instead of staying on the sidewalk. I heard a voice come from the car. I didn’t even bother to see if it was a guy or a girl, I just kept on walking. The idiot had no other choice but to keep going or be seen

All you can do is stay safe in the meantime. Take self-defence classes, take up a martial art, if it's legal; carry a weapon. If you like to wear heels to parties or whatever, bring sneakers with you so when you are walking outside you are wearing appropriate footwear and you can actually run away when necessary. Yeah, it sucks that it's necessary now, but it's not going to happen anytime soon that men will be segregated from women.
