Society is literally built on the expectation that women will forego their health to take care of others. And this is somehow celebrated and encouraged as an act of heroics.

At the end of the day, we only have ourselves and health should be absolute paramount to all those priorities.

I wish I would have read this about a decade ago when I was in a relationship with a “spiritual” guy who had convinced me that all of my problems could be fixed with “natural” cures. Turns out I had lupus! I’m all for holistic medicine, but I really needed medical intervention at the time. I decided to trust him instead of my gut feelings, and it ended up with me being sick and stuck in an abusive relationship for several years.

I’ve come to realize over time that he “loved” me the most when I was having flare-ups. He wanted me sick so I wouldn’t leave. You’re absolutely right in suggesting that my illness contributed to my pickme tendencies. I was too sick and tired to fight for myself!

I am so so happy for you that you got healthcare. While I have not had any experience like this, I have experienced having low self esteem and insecurities resulting in tearing yourself down not helping yourself due to completely different issues like this. I love that you're out of that relationship! Good riddance

A good indicator of my mental health is my toenails/skin lmao.

Since dropping my dead weight ex my stubborn blemish has cleared up & skin is super clear, I feel miles healthier , am taking daily supplements / health shakes , back on my glute growth plan in the gym and my feet / nails have never looked better.

I also recommend biotin for growing hair / strong nails . I’m massively into researching organic antioxidant inflammatory health foods, syrups and powders. So easy to put in shakes with frozen fruit. Easy way to stay healthy. Vitamin D3 drops massively improved my mood as well.

I recommend these books :

Lifespan - why we age and why we don’t have to. (There’s an interesting growing body of research suggesting we can absolutely cheat / slow ageing and extend life / health by milestones).

How not to die. (lists how to avoid a million diseases that can kill you).

The happy kitchen. (Mood and food- awesome book)

The future of nutrition.

Super immunity.

Self care wise I enjoy trips to the sauna, pampering, hikes, my dog, buying flowers /nice home decor, rad fem meet-ups, spiritual stuff, essential oils/candles, writing & trips to new cities. This is my self protection. And bitching about men on FDS because these mofos drag you down.

I also recommend moving to big cities/ visiting better educated areas for better options/ HVW friends if you struggle in your area.

Now I’m late 20s I’m investing in decent (not extortionate) skincare ingredients , wearing makeup less and taking collagen / vitamin c more. I have no wrinkles & wear sunscreen - not that wrinkles scare me but obviously it’s nice to delay them . My skin / health has got better with age/ wisdom and being wiser to men’s bullshit & the way I’m going , I’m going to age very gracefully.

I don’t take shit off men & let them drag me down too long. Men my age look haggard already- I will outrun them by far lmao I already get men 5-10 years younger approaching so fuck their noise. The FDS mindset & investing in yourself pays off. I’m not scared of this wall shit which is male projection. Men are desperate at any age. Take care of yourself first & you can afford to be fussy.

I always look and feel better leaving men most times. Why is that if they make such good longterm partners .

I constantly had health issues with my ex. It was stress and anxiety from dealing with his lies.

This is why abusive men prey on Hv women in a vulnerable place- they know they can’t keep you when you’re back to full health.

As someone who is chronically ill, your post resonates, and I know all too well how they don’t just expect, but demand praise for “putting up” with being with what they view as an essentially defective woman. There’s so many ways patriarchy infects everything about women’s lived experience, it makes me furious. Men believing they’re entitled to a perfect woman, which includes perfect health. The ableism, specifically patriarchal ableism, that manifests as women’s illnesses (which so often result in depression, mood swings weight gain, hormonal/reproductive issues) being viewed as a moral failing. Doctors so often being huge egomaniacal shitheads who won’t even bother to properly listen to and diagnose women, instead leaving it to “hysteria” and years of being a guinea pig to misdiagnosed medications that only cause turmoil in our lives. Men’s egos needing a standing ovation anytime they do the bare minimum, let alone be a supportive partner to the person who is ACTUALLY suffering. I just read a post on a thread about women’s health issues and the boyfriend is complaining about how his girlfriend’s sex drive is lowering. Never mind that the disease she suffers from is extremely painful, causes severe depression, makes your hair fall out, rapid uncontrollable weight gain, and destroys self esteem, no, the real problem here, is the fact that she won’t f*ck him enough. And he has the audacity to come onto the forum to demand emotional labor from women who suffer from the same disease, to help him. It would be laughable if it weren’t so common, and therefore depressing. Patriarchy is so much more than being objectified, it literally impacts every arena of our lives, including our health. I think the best thing we can do for our physical health is to avoid unsupportive men at all costs. Because the alternative is a marked decrease in our quality of life, or even death.
