I feel women who are senior citizens sometimes settle because they feel like they have to remarry and not necessarily because they want to. A lot of men want to remarry for a caretaker, not companionship.

From what I’ve seen, a lot of the time the women are basically treated like a house elf until she loses her independence because she can no longer single-handedly care for both of them. You would think that two people means almost half as much work, but in reality it often means a woman caring for herself and a man who doesn’t care for her and in his 65+ years of life never bothered to learn to do his own laundry or clean up after himself. When she is no longer physically able to care for 2 she is treated like she can’t care for herself, even if she would be fine alone.
