I’m so tired of working harder/smarter than everyone around me and yet having less than optimal results. I come from a high achieving, neurotic family and we’ve all worked hard to get somewhere. My parents don’t ever rest – EVER. So maybe my problem is in my genes! Idk. All I know is I went above and beyond in high school and college. I have a good job and I’m working extra on my ‘side hustles’ AND I’m trying to have a life (including dating). But it is never. ever. Enough.
My roommate is naturally more beautiful (and yes, standards of beauty are objective) and skinnier than I am and everything’s just a breeze for her. If I spend one hour reading something she’ll 30 minutes. If I spend 6 months looking for a job she’ll get one in a month (for real). To top it all off she has the PERFECT HVM BOYFRIEND who DOTES ON HER and WANTS TO MARRY HER and carries even MY groceries in and makes ME coffee because I’m his girlfriend’s roommate. That makes me feel even more terrible. And I know you’re going to say my insecurity shows and that’s why I haven’t landed a HVM yet but I’m a good actor and really quite manipulative. I really don’t show it when things are eating me up inside. It's true.
The areas in my life I feel worst about are my looks, my career/income, and my dating life. This comparison game I’m playing is destroying me. But I can’t seem to stop. I’ve gone to therapy, meditated, distracted myself, told myself to ‘love myself and take it easy’ but i. just can’t. I tried being more low key for 2 years and ended up hating myself even MORE than when I was working on achieving all the time. I tell myself if I keep climbing up the career ladder or land a HVM I might be content, but I'm honestly not sure. Nothing seems to be enough for me, especially the career stuff.
I now have a choice between giving up and becoming mundane for the rest of my life, not caring what I make of it or what I achieve or what kind of person I end up with if at all, working a ‘normal’ job and having a ‘normal’ life. OR continuing to fight, but I’m so very TIRED. I wonder whether I’ll ever get that big, pivotal moment that changes everything and makes it easier.
My question is for similarly over achieving/aspiring to be high achieving, neurotic, insecure yet outwardly confident SINGLE women who are on the BRINK of ‘making it’ but never seem to do.
What is your coping mechanism? Or are we meant to live like this forever?
