They weaponise this stereotype to gaslight and dismiss your concerns. This was the classic response to me by my emotionally abusive ex ‘you’re being overly emotional’ whenever I said why he hurt me. If I walked out of the room, he used to insist I ‘stormed out, slammed the door’ even if I didn’t. They try to make you believe you’re a crazy, irrational, overemotional child when they themselves have either 0 empathy.

Edit not: if you recognise yourself, RUN. It took me years to re-learn how to trust and not minimise my legitimate emotions.

A powerful piece of advice that has served me well is this:

It’s ok to feel angry, but not to show it.

I think it can apply to other emotions as well. Once you lose your cool, you lose the upper hand. You lose power. A LVM will use this against you.

We have emotions, and we should express them to those we are close to and can be vulnerable around. In my case, that is reserved for a privileged few, and certainly not a man who I was just dating.

Great advice. Having emotions is normal and healthy. So many of us are shamed for crying when we are sad or frustrated, or for expressing anger, no matter how diplomatically or productively.
