Shrek
[–][deleted] 150 points151 points152 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Good example! Shrek became a huge d*ck once Fiona had children. Like he had some childish crisis or something.

And in Disney's The Princess and the Frog, they actually turned her into a frog.
[–]windwaker43216 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There was ALOT wrong with that movie...
[–]FluffMuffinJazWalnut3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But the whole point of that movie is that their is a cursed on the dude and any one that isn't in love with him will fall into the curse as well
[–]FluffMuffinJazWalnut1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well the main point was that he wasn't ready to have them but realized that he enjoyed being a parent
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, He acted like a child and was unlikeable. I felt bad for Fiona for marrying a guy who doesn't even know if children will make him happy or not. He should have been responsible but instead acted a teenager who got his GF pregnant by accident. *shrug*

Shrek is propaganda to make us comfortable with living with an ogre in a swamp.
[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And becoming one.
[–]FluffMuffinJazWalnut5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What Fiona was already turning into a ogre but then she realised that she was in love with Shrek no matter what his flaw was and that she was gross at heart to the is no propaganda or misogyny it teaches kids to not judge people by appearance but my their personality

I love that this is an example. Lessons can be found everywhere hey

OMFG We need to do a megathread about fairytales and how they’re basically manuals on how to get used and abused.

Yes! My fav was Little Mermaid. As a full-fledged adult it’s appalling — mean girl mermaids, tyrannical father, and child brides. Dont forget ariel is a total bimbo who uses a fork to brush her hair despite the fact her father carries a giant magical fork (triton) her entire life. How about when Prince Eric asks her name? Why she can’t write it down after losing her voice signing a contract. It’s no wonder girls still grow up with these unreasonable expectations.

Have you read “The Surface Breaks” by Louise O’Neill? It’s a feminist retelling of The Little Mermaid and basically highlights all the fucked up ways that story subjugates women. Highly recommended!

That sounds great! Thanks for the recommendation.

Also the woman with power (Ursula) is demonized.
ETA: Ursula did nothing wrong. Ariel approached her. Ursula named her terms and Ariel agreed. Ursula kept to the agreement.

I forgot about her... She just wanted to marry Eric IIRC? Not sure what that Eric had to make women fight for him
[–]EmergencyShitFDS Apprentice5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In the movie she wanted ariel’s voice, which was the collateral for the loan of the legs. Her almost marrying Eric was just a sneaky trick to keep Eric distracted so that he wouldn’t give Ariel true love’s kiss.
The original fairy tale has a way different ending.

That and she falls in love with a guy she doesn’t even know and marries him a week later. Even my teenage self was like wtf.

This reminds me of something a therapist told me when I was a teen: “You’ll have to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince”. Yup... :)
