And while that appears to be true. I'm going to keep it up because the comments have done a fairly good job of pointing out the various issues with this argument.

Though, I will be keeping an eye on things.

Yeah. The Dunedin Study had a really good article about this. I think if I recall correctly something like 5% of men commit over 50% of all violent crimes. So when you mean a strange man you don't yet know if he's one of those ones. I guess it's a bit #NOTALLMEN

The study also found that domestic violence was an equal opportunity crime, with women being just as likely to attack their partners as men. However, severe assaults and murder are more likely to be perpetrated by men. That completely turned on its head the conventional wisdom that men were always the abusive partners in DV and women were the victims.

When men get defensive on hearing suppsed facts ike this, why do they get defensive?

So given the above example, our assumptions about the causes of domestic violence were faulty. When men called the police to report that their partner was being violent to them, it was often status quo for the police to arrest THEM. Basically the man was always guilty, which doubly victimised those men in the same way that blaming women who have been raped as 'asking for it' is equally horrific.

I think men get defensive over topics like sexual assault and domestic violence, where men do not commit a majority of the violence, but are still vilified as criminals, and women are treated like innocent victims.

Besides, black people get upset about stereotypes over violence and "thug culture", and many of the same people who (rightly) call that out as racist, will turn around and demonize men in exactly the same way.

I would think it likely, though some makes the case that when woman commit acts of violence it is not counted as such, skewing the official results. I buy into it somewhat, but even still I'd think men commit more, though also noted in my mind that it is against other men moreso than women.

I don't know why men gets defensive when bringing it up, truth should never hurt. Perhaps they think it an attack? Like when people cite crime statistics along racial lines.

It depends on context.

In and of itself, we do, statistically. There's nothing inherently incorrect about that. But it's rarely ever a simple statement of fact in pure isolation, and that's where the problems begin.

In the gender debate, it's usually thrown up as some kind of victim-blame-y deflection of a men's issue. Or it is used to demand some kind of collective responsibility for men in solving the issues of others, in a way that other groups are not demanded solve men's issues.

When black people say 'black lives matter', you're considered a racist ass if you then start shouting about how black people commit so much crime and they should sort them out first. And rightly so, because the issues being raised are valuable in and of themselves. It is incredibly toxic to couple resolution of a social issue of a particular group like this to some kind of grand bargain where it's almost traded for movement on an issue that group is believed to be especially responsible for.

Black issues, women's issues, trans issues, men's issues - all are valuable in their own right. They should not be coupled to the solution of another group's issues before they are taken seriously.

They get defensive because you use the excuse of men commiting the most violence to punish men collectively, despite studies showing that punishment, and particular collective punishment drives people towards violence.

So I ask you that: what are you doing to stop the violence, why do you realize acts that cause violence to the world?

No, that is not a rhetorical question. You were trolling, you were acting in a violent way, you know that. But if you search inside and connect with yourself you might discover why do people commit acts of violence. And maybe answer your own question?

You are angry, you want revenge, you have been hurt and find in violence the way people will listen to your pain. I don't know. But you are not so different than the people you believe to hate. The people who commit acts of violence are feeling the way you are feeling right now.

I would guess so. Even if this is not the case it certainly is true that men commit much more serious violence. As to why men get defensive about this, people don't like facts that speak badly about their group. Black people don't like hearing that they are disproportionately represented in violent crime. Women don't like hearing that most people with genius level IQ are men. Gay people don't like hearing that they are disproportionately represented in the child abuse community. We could go on and on.

Personally I think it best to confront these head on. Getting defensive just shows that A) you have something to defend B) That you are willing to defend it even against truth.

I think humans in general are very apt to see their group identity as part of their personal identity - if I identify as "a republican" and someone says "republicans are less educated than democrats", it's easy to mistake that as an aspersion on myself rather than a population statistic. Secondarily, people often use such statistics to make fallacious arguments - for example the fact that democrats are more highly educated than republicans, on average, holds little to no logical bearing on who is more correct about fiscal policy.

I think one way to try and reduce this unhelpful defensiveness is for people to stop making their groupings and beliefs part of their identity - saying "I am a Democrat" is a statement that doesn't have a good analogue in political speech from my country, we're far more likely to say "I voted for <Democrat nominee>". When you make yourself "a Democrat" or "an MRA" or "a feminist" you are, I believe, making yourself more likely to act like one - you'll add a dose of confirmation bias to your ingestion of arguments, you'll listen to "feminist opinions" from the viewpoint that you should believe them because you are "a feminist", you will hate people who attack MRAs because you are "an MRA". If instead you think "I agree with Democrat policy on X, Y, and Z" then not only are you pulling yourself out of the echo chamber a little, but those who seek to discredit you cannot distract you with immediate claims of hypocrisy or by attacking things you don't actually believe, because you have opinions that are at odds with Democrat opinions.

Because it places the blame of an abstract thing like 'violence' on a gender. The issue here is blaming a group of people for the actions of some on an immutable group trait like ethnic grouping or religious affiliation. This is called bigotry. People don't like being subjected to bigotry - even men.

The violence of societies, the war making etc all serve to protect societies from aggression or annihilation. The idea that everything is 'goodies' and 'baddies' is for children. Men who go to war do so to protect their societies. In essence to protect their women and children. Those men suffered and died in their millions - so that women didn't have to. Instead of being thankful for the bravery and self sacrifice of men, feminists like to turn it around and blame men 'for war' - as if the peaceful and beneficial aspects of society they take for granted did not come at enormous cost to men. And as if when women are leaders they do not engage in warfare also - in fact they do.

Intra societal violence - violent crime etc is overwhelmingly male. This has several causes. 1. Men are overwhelmingly required to be breadwinners, to provide for others at any cost to themselves. In poorer sections of society often the only options available are criminal. And thus violence ensues. 2. Competition between males for females is often provoked by females, leading to violence. 3. Men are required to be self sufficient in order to attract a mate. This includes emotional self sufficiency, which is ruthlessly enforced by women. Men who are not confident are weeded out by the women. This 'machismo' (now called 'toxic masculinity') is some men's over-reaction to women's aggregate mating preferences. The state of having to depend only on onesself places a huge emotional burden on men, often leading to violence, depression and suicide. It's not easy being a man. It's a far more violent and lonely world we inhabit, than women do, for sure. Men suffer far more physical violence than women do. You wouldn't want to be in our shoes most of the time.

Do men commit the majority of violence?

Depends what you call violence, and committing it, I guess. Recently, a man got killed by a mob because a woman falsely accused him of rape. Would that count as violence on the part of that woman, or at least something we could call violence by proxy?
