Paul Quinn has now been found guilty of the rape for which Andrew Malkinson was originally convicted in 2004. Subsequently a police officer read out a statement by the rape victim. I have not found a complete transcript online, so I thought I'd make one.

"I am very pleased with the verdict today. It does not change the fact that two lives have been impacted in such a way, however justice has been served. This investigation has been ongoing for over twenty years. It has robbed Mr Malkinson of seventeen years in prison, and robbed me of the life I wanted to have. The impact of what happened that day has stayed with me and will stay for life. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in this process especially the GMP investigation, Mr Price, King's Council and his team, and my independent sexual violence advocate, Helen. The support has been more than I could ask for. I would also like to thank the wider media for the respect shown for my privacy during this time. Following that, this will be my one and only statement. Thank you."

So an acknowledgement of what Malkinson was put through, but not one word of apology or even acknowledgement of her own responsibility for it. Also not acknowledged is the extraordinary grace Malkinson has extended toward her in his public statements.

And she does bear some responsibility. At Quinn's trial she testified that at the time of Malkinson's trial she wasn't sure it was him, and even told the police about her doubts. What she didn't do was tell the jury. Her testimony then was that she was "more than 100% sure” he was her attacker.

I get that she was traumatised after a truly brutal rape. I completely believe that she was pressured and influenced by the police. I'm also prepared to accept her claim to have been naive at the time. These things go some way toward explaining why she gave the testimony she did. They do not excuse it. She was about 33-years old at the time of the trial, so not especially young. There's been no suggestion that she is learning-disabled or was otherwise incapable of understanding what a trial is for, her role as a witness, or the consequences for the defendant if found guilty.

I'm not calling for her to be prosecuted, deanonymized, or vilified on social media. Nor am I saying that she is solely or even primarily responsible for this miscarriage of justice. The lion's share of the blame rightly falls on the GMP and the CCRC. But she bears some responsibility for Malkinson's wrongful conviction, and I find it notable that I have not been able to find a single commentator outside the manosphere prepared to say so either in the mainstream or social media.
