- Threatened sexual contact (threats of physical force): Men 0.6%, Women 0.5% (similar, men slightly higher)

The study did find higher rates of women being victims of sexual violence overall, but that is based on moving the goalposts away from threats or phsyical force being used.

We discuss below how male victims may under report based on their own perceptions of female sexual violence below, and how that problem is almost certainly exacerbated with time. It is almost certainly exacerbated by the form of sexual violence perceived as being less severe (eg intoxicated sex vs physical coercion) too.

The 48% figure for male victims of female perpetrators, however, comes from the NIPSVS 2010 data. There are strong reasons to prioritize last-year numbers over lifetime prevalence statistics.

Why Last-Year Numbers Are More Reliable Than Lifetime Figures:

First, men who are victims of sexual violence do not receive the same support services as women. As a result, they are more likely to drop out of the population that participates in surveys—through homelessness, institutionalization, drug addiction, job loss, or suicide. This systematically distorts the statistics downward for male victimization.

The CDC’s own *National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NIPSVS) 2023/2024 Intimate Partner Violence Data Brief* acknowledges this limitation under the “Limitations” section:

“Second, the sampling frame does not include adults in institutional settings, or those who are unhoused, potentially underestimating the prevalence of IPV in the U.S.”

Household-based surveys like the NIPSVS exclude or severely under-represent people who are homeless or institutionalized. Because these groups are disproportionately male, any factor that pushes male victims out of stable housing or into institutions at higher rates will lower the measured prevalence of male victimization.

Both men and women tend to view female aggression as less serious than equivalent aggression by men—and this bias actually intensifies over time.

When we combine this perception bias with the well-documented finding that men who are raped or sexually assaulted by women often do not even recognize it as victimization, it becomes entirely reasonable to conclude that men are misremembering (or failing to report) female-perpetrated violence over time—including potentially reclassifying female rapes they experienced as less violent or forgetting them altogether while retaining clearer memories of male-perpetrated assaults.

Newer versions of the NIPSVS have fiddled with the instruments to cause male victims to be counted less or not at all, which was to be expected based on Mary Koss, etc

I am also trying to use Grok to repair the dead links in the Reference book of men's issues (on criminal justice) but it keeps giving me new bad links 😛 but I was also able to add sources I got from the honey badger discord for a MEGA link dump, and find out about somne new and interesting stuff too, like books form the 1920s and 1950s about the criminal justice system being more lax toward women.

In the US rape is rape. We don’t distinguish between forcibly being penetrated and being forced to penetrate. The UK is very backwards in that regard.
