Absolutely worth it. Lowers stress, keeps you healthy and you don't just need to look good for women. When you are attractive everyone treats you better, helping with all interactions, including career. It's called the halo effect. Keeping in shape is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

exactly. The more time i spend at the gym then the more money i spend on food and the further away from retirement i get.

Body weight is fine to get started, and I recommend this excellent site for free workouts. But you will never get any stronger without increasing your resistance after a certain point. Even increasing your reps will give you diminishing returns at some point.
The reason we do barbell instead of bodyweight is so we can go heavier and keep improving.
The reason we do barbell instead of machines is to load up our core instead of letting a machine isolate a muscle, so we have strong biceps and weak back, for example.
The reason we do barbell instead of dumbbells is so we can get both hands on the bar and use the safety bars on the squat rack to catch the bar if we fail a rep, so we don't die.
The reason we do barbell instead of dumbbells is so when we start to plateau, we can increase our weight by a pound or even fractions of a pound, when dumbbells increase by 5 lb each side. If you can't make the jump to the next size up, you stagnate.

Absolutely. Don't do it for women, do it for YOU.
I started working out in my late 20s, before I knew anything about the "manosphere", and even though it's cliche I can say without a doubt that it changed my life and is one of the best decisions I ever made.
I will be 35 this year and still look like I'm in my late 20s. A lot of the guys I went to high school and college with are already starting to break down, I am still strong and virile (and, if you want to go there, I am still attracting women ten years younger).
Additionally, I used to believe I was depression-prone, but have found that exercise is an effective antidepressant.
On top of that, you will build self-confidence not just in how you look, but in the fact that you're able to develop and maintain the discipline to eat healthy, drag yourself to the gym when you don't want to, AND to keep improving/getting stronger over time.
Another thing is that you don't even need a gym membership--books like Mark Lauren's You Are Your Own Gym are compact and yet packed with all kinds of exercises and routines you can do at home, out at the park, or wherever.
There is NO downside I can think of to a safe and well-implemented fitness regimen for a man. We are built for strength and activity, we should take advantage of that fact. Outside of the cost of feeding yourself, it costs very little to nothing, except maybe 6 hours a week.
Keep going, do it for YOU. Take care of yourself. It isn't always easy, isn't always fun, but you will NOT regret it.

Do you recomend skipping the conventional advice to lift then and do a 50/50 cardio split?

I work far away from my home and have joined a work gym. So can only realistically commit 4 days per week. Unless I go running at the weekend or something.
I am a skinny fat type

You say you get 100% of what you put in. Which isnt true because my 6 months at the gym was no benefit to me now because I stopped. so its only beneficial if you make it a lifestyle and continue FOREVER. So once you start you cant stop.

NO. The Paleo-Game-Gym cult is rampant throughout men's movements. Unfortunately it's even pushed here when it's talked about as some sort of cure-all panacea that's going to make your life better. Frankly, most people would be 10x better off doing something to make more money and finding something to keep healthy, unless you just really enjoy pumping iron, going to the gym is lame as fuck when you could be out training your body AND mind through martial arts, hiking, mountain biking/cycling, etc.
I'm saying this as a former gym junkie for over 5 years. If you're really pushing yourself to get them gains and you're not on PEDs lifting heavy weights isn't all that good for your joints...and other things...over time, regardless of what anyone claims about technique, You ever seen someone blow out their sphincter doing heavy squats? What about fucked up knees and shoulder joints and snap city lower backs? How about watching someone botch a PR on snatch? Not pretty...An then you have to ask yourself why limit yourself to one small building doing one activity that really isn't going to translate to much else in your life?
