IN reality, where money trumps everything else, it will never get reformed because the people in power get too much money from it. Disagree. It's too fiddly, easily abused or gamed, nobody expects a married women to itemize what she spends.

Instead I propose a simple limit cap, based on whatever the government is currently paying single parents per child.

I know in my case 20 odd years ago that would be the difference between about $44 per month and the $420 I was paying, ie around 10 times what we were receiving while I was there and unemployed.

Funny how me leaving (for very good reasons I won't go into here) the same kid in the same house suddenly got 10X more expensive once I found a job, huh?

Child support should be on a separate bank account, with a debit card for whoever is getting the support. The account needs to be reviewable by both sides and if anything fishy shows up, courts need to be informed.

It’s pretty screwed up system in NZ. I have my kids 50/50 and I still pay child support. I’m more than happy to contribute to the cost of raising children but the fact that I buy them things they need when I have them, pay school fees and still have to pay the child support really irritates me. I have no idea what the ex does with the money. The best I can do is forget about it and just be the best dad I can be. But the system is pretty screwed up. The ex lives with her fiancé so they have double the income, I’m GMOW, have my own home, car etc, but still give her a percentage of my income.

It would immediately solve all kinds of problems. It'll never be fair for men, ever, and it will never be fixed. So just get rid of it entirely.

Women would then be forced to take responsibility for their own bad decisions, instead of just making men pay for them as they currently do. If a woman doesn't want to raise her children on her on, then perhaps she should be careful how many dudes she gets cream pied by every week. It's not meant to buy necessities for children, per se. It's meant to 'equalize' the living situation between the father and mothers house - the idea is, you can't have the dad making 5x as much as the mother and the child going from squalor at the mom's house to living in luxury at the dad's house, because that would alienate the child from the lower earning parent. I don't agree w it, but that's the logic being applied here.
