It depends on what kind of debt and what chapter of bankruptcy she files for. When it comes to types of debt, basically anything that isn't money owed to the government(student loans, back taxes, etc) it's forgivable. Under chapter 7 bankruptcy, she'll get rid of all her debt but also have a really shitty credit score for a bit. Since she made less than $3K in one year, this is probably the route she'll take.
Chapter 13 Bankruptcy allows you to get rid of certain debts and keep others and make a plan to get them paid off. You can choose to keep certain debts under Chapter 7 if you wish. I did with my house and car payments. Everything else I was absolved of.

You're welcome. I got into debt trying to finance a family of five on an income of 35K year(gross pay). The amount of debt I had accumulated by the time I filed was around 50K, I think. I filed over a year ago and my credit score is back to 675 from 400 something right after I filed.

All the stuff the other guy posted is correct, but I'll add one more BIG thing: everything you own with certain allowances can be liquidated to pay your debts.
Bankruptcy is basically a legal process to get you from a massively negative net worth back to zero. It doesn't let you take out a mortgage and then get out of it with a free house.
Most of the allowances are intended to allow you to get to work and generally be a productive member of society, and avoid making you a dependent on the state. There is no point in taking all your money and then having the state pay to give you welfare/etc. For example, you might have to be credited a few thousand in any equity you have in a car, so if you're driving a cheap used car you just get to keep it free and clear, and if you're driving an expensive one you have to trade it in for a cheap used one. You might get some equity on your home, so if your house is mostly paid off you can keep it, but otherwise you'll git a bit of money to use towards modest housing.
People tend to be critical of bankruptcy because it potentially lets people be irresponsible, but:
Sure, we all pay for the costs of bankruptcy in higher interest rates, but if we didn't have bankruptcy we'd pay for it in other ways via taxes, and likely in ways that are more expensive like crime.
Bankruptcy is just the lesser evil. It also reflects a balance between accountability and acknowledging that sometimes things just don't work out or some people needing to learn the hard way.

Declaring bankruptcy should not be a financial strategy or tactic. It’s an act of last resort. There are more negatives than those outlined. Also remember that at the end of the day you owe people money...there is dignity in owning that obligation and making good on your debts. For every declared bankrupt we all pay through higher premiums and price escalation... it’s all factored into the price of goods. Be responsible and spend what you earn.....and what you can afford....nothing more.
