Emotional reactions to logical arguments indicates a defense mechanism maintaining someone's world view. Doesn't mean you're right or they're wrong, however.

To circumvent this, you need to work on your approach. Instead of challenging their perspective, you need to invite them to see yours.

OR...or you can say "fuck it" and keep your opinions to yourself and enjoy watching everyone spin that wheel chasing the pellets.

I still struggle to accept this reality. I've got 2 female housemates that like to sleep around and are very honest about their sex lives and it's disturbing. The way they see men as basically worthless other than to get what they want ie, sex or money.

One of them has a Masters degree and refuses to date anyone else less "educated" than her and at the same time she admits she's dumb. lol wtf is wrong with this world.

One thing that you may be running into is that the stuff that is talked about on this MGTOW group is probably unheard-of in a lot of areas of society. Something like female hypergamy, for example. It's going to seem like typical background conversation for this reddit group, but if you bring it up to a group of old women at a church picnic, they may think your ideas came from Mars or something. (Just kidding. ;-) )

Someone who has never heard of this stuff has no background to understand how you reached these conclusions. You may think you've provided them with good arguments, but it may simply be a big mental leap for them to even try to take it all in, whether or not they would even agree with it.

For example, let's say you argue that it's a bad idea to get married. To support your argument, you may highlight divorce rates. People probably aren't going to disagree that divorce is common. Where you are more likely to have troubling convincing people is if you make the much bolder argument that "true love is just about impossible to find," or something like that. This is because it's not that hard to find long-time married couples who claim they are happy (granted, they are often older couples). So, I think a lot of "mainstream" people just aren't going to buy into that bold argument when they think there are so many happily married people around.

If you follow this group at least somewhat, you are going to see stories of some of the worst that the relationship world can bring. Lots of people here have been through that stuff directly -- that may be what led them here. So, not only do you get stories of horrible relationships, but people here are going to regularly express opinions that are skeptical of relationships. Because of all this, if you read this group regularly, it's not surprising if you are going to have a more skeptical view of the relationship world than a typical "mainstream" person. So if you then talk to a "mainsteam" person as if they are an MGTOW, I wouldn't be surprised if you are surprised that MGTOW-type concepts don't seem to make "natural" sense to them.

Even people on this group don't all agree on everything, especially some of the bolder concepts, or some of the more "absolute" claims that people have argued. Something like the argument that there's no meaning of life, you can have a good, interesting debate about that, and you can provide good arguments, but it's a tough thing to really "prove," especially if you are talking to mainstream people who may be much less skeptical of the world than an MGTOW group.

So, more than anything, it may just be that you are kind of like someone who has spent a lot of their time around people with similar political beliefs, and then start talking to a room full of people with completely different political beliefs. Even though that person may be saying the same things they said before they walked into that room, all of a sudden, the people listening react completely differently. I think this may explain what you are describing.

This is why I always say anger is a natural reaction to these things because people have been told the exact opposite. The anger phase is real. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

The first rather obvious reason is because it affects something they are directly involved with. For example if I tell a fur wearer "excuse me sir did you know they coat is made from the skin of an animal that was tortured and killed for it's skin" and proceed to give various arguments why it's cruel and unnecessary, they will probably not react very well. Some of them might be ignorant and upon discovery of knowledge will be willing to change their ways. Some already know these things, and no matter what they say will rebuke you. Others are somewhere in the middle, and they might for example show a resistance, but will go home and contemplate it. As it is for anything.

I always take it as an encouraging sign when people get angry and jump up to defend their beliefs....even if their beliefs are illogical.

That reaction shows that they are still capable of some rational thought and might yet be saved.

The people who just shut down when hearing a view they don't like are the scary people. They are the true believers that no argument will ever change. The kool-aid is strong in them.

The people with the steely-eyed thousand yard stare that do not respond to anything that challenges their ideas. they are the scary ones.

Talk to a cultist, or a true patriot of any country, and you'll see that look.

They just shut down when confronted with opposing ideas. They no longer engage in dialog.

I've seen it from Maoists, US Patriots, Lyndon LaRouche supporters, hard-core feminists, military recruits, Evangelicals, Mormons, and even teachers and professors.

It has nothing to do with the truth and everything to do with identity. If you were to attack a belief or worldview that they did not construct an identity around, they would not feel personally threatened by it. You shattering the illusion they have created and maintained means that they have to replace it with something else and the thought of having to do that is frightening.
