As others have pointed out, this is the default state for the average adult male. You are a nonentity in public spaces unless you impose yourself in some way. And even being a nonentity as a woman is a privilege compared to the same status as a man since if you're female people are less likely to see you as a potential threat to women and children just for going about your day.

This sort of thing is why I don't feel bad for women complaining that no one hits on them or asks them out; they're simply complaining about a privilege they believe their gender entitles them to, and they're usually not willing to take the initiative to go after someone they like to begin with. It's like a trust-fund kid complaining that he has to work ten hours a week because his inheritance isn't big enough.
