Four theories about cultural suppression of female sexuality are evaluated. Data are reviewed on cross-cultural differences in power and sex ratios, reactions to the sexual revolution, direct restraining inﬂuences on adolescent and adult female sexuality, double standard patterns of sexual morality, female genital surgery, legal and religious restrictions on sex, prostitution and pornography, and sexual deception. The view that men suppress female sexuality received hardly any support and is ﬂatly contradicted by some ﬁndings. Instead, the evidence favors the view that women have worked to stiﬂe each other’s sexuality because sex is a limited resource that women use to negotiate with men, and scarcity gives women an advantage.

It's a bit sexist. Let's be real here. I find it hard to believe that 100% of all women are manipulators. Similarly, it is irresponsible to claim that men are the only producers and that women are but extractors.

I realize it's nice to have an entity to gather around and attack mercilessly, but we want equal rights for everyone - a sort of team mentality - right?

Well yeah, if you have power then you'll use that power to get what you want instead of working for it. Especially if you're told that using and abusing that power is OK.

it's a good theory and there's mountains of historical evidence to support it. The irony is that feminism is the "pussy union" breaker, that by extinguishing slut shaming and encouraging women to be easy they're lowering the price of sex for all involved. And then some of these very same feminists wonder why men won't invest in women ("man up"). This is indeed great for men who have the ability to get laid an all, but for the majority of the guys out there it's a whole other story...

How common is it for a man to feel he's been manipulated and what are the specific circumstances?

I ask because I have never felt that I was being manipulated. When I've asked women out, I've paid for the date, I've shown them respect and an appropriate level of deference. I've never felt that I was getting a bad deal out of this arrangement. I've done many thing to help women that I was dating or used to date. I've helped them move. I've done home repair. I've just never felt like they're manipulating me into it.

I just can't relate to theories like this.

I also don't really see it as a rights issue. You always have the right to say "no."

I fail to see any kind of evidence or example of an actual manipulation anywhere in his theory.

Women are forced to lie about the amount of sex they want.

They probably want sex. But not with just about anyone. And not without a guarantee of protection.

They don't have as much sex because they want to keep the "price" of sex high.

Well maybe because the consequences of pregnancy (something that the sex is for) are much higher for females.

Women punish sexually open females.

Well most of men would go after those who offer "free sex" for their wives as well.

Pornography is derided by women.

Women probably don't like seeing their men lusting after younger women.

So this manipulation then extends to other parts of life.

WHAT manipulation?
