My friend's baby mama was not suitable to care for a child, so he got full custody.

Despite him having no criminal background or history of drug abuse, a government agency checked in on him regularly as if he had been accused of abusing his kid already.

By default, the government does assume you aren't suitable parents.

Its not a government agency. Its a program of the Office of Family Assistance which in turn is a sub agency of the Administration for Children and Families.

As for figuring out how to be a good father yourself. Well. Look humans are cleaver monkeys but child rearing is seriously complicated. Its not something you can figure out from first principles. Humans have always looked to third parties for help. Traditionally close family members and usually the local religion. These days the state thinks its worth making at least a minimal effort to try and improve the quality of parenting. After all the rest of us are going to be stuck with the results of parents mistakes for the next few decades at least.

There are plenty of programs aimed at women. If you support equality you can hardly object to some being aimed at men.

Up next on "let's look for things to bitch about"...Programs aimed at young disadvantaged men to help them become better fathers and members of society.

Believe it or not, there are plenty of men who are ex-cons, teenagers, drug addicts, etc. who may not be ready for fatherhood, never wanted fatherhood, were too irresponsible to avoid fatherhood, probably didn't have a father themselves, yet find themselves in a position where they have a child to take care of (probably with an equally irresponsible/unready mother).

Notice how this program focuses on them being not only responsible fathers, but members of society as well. How the hell could anyone get upset at this?
