I don't see why feminism is seen as the opposite of the men's rights movement. In my opinion they are exactly the same thing. They both find inequalities between the genders and work to equalize them.

Of course tumblr feminism is a whole different story.

Backwards indeed. That facebook poster needs to read about the "tender years doctrine". Little over a hundred years ago custody went to fathers by default. It was feminist agitation that changed that default.

I see. And if men were awarded default custody of children, that would be evidence of matriarchy, surely. Because then men would be burdened with child-care while women were free to drink appletinis all day. That's the conclusion the author of that comment would reach, right?

What is the "Tender Years Doctrine, Alex?"

In the early nineteenth century, Mrs. Caroline Norton, a prominent British feminist, social reformer author, journalist, and society beauty began to campaign for the right of women to have custody of their children. Norton, who had undergone a divorce and been deprived of her children, worked with the politicians of those times and eventually was able to convince the British Parliament to enact legislation to protect mothers' rights. The result was the Custody of Infants Act 1839, which gave some discretion to the judge in a child custody case and established a presumption of maternal custody for children under the age of seven years. In 1873 the Parliament extended the presumption of maternal custody until a child reached sixteen years of age. This doctrine spread then in majority of the states of the world as England was controlling a wide empire.

They kept the same standard when they decided to pretend it was "In the best interests of the child...", they just decided to rename the doctrine used to justify it.
