I think people are tired of vapid celebrities acting like they're the moral arbiters of the world. And sick of them feeling they have anything of value to add to complex social and legal issues.

This is literally a circle jerk event for what movies are "good" and who did "good" making them. Not a place to talk about social issues.

I can't understand people wanting to watch that crap at all. It's literally an industry patting itself on it's back and saying 'look how great I am'. No thanks. Even more so now, as the industry has become preachy and appointed itself moral arbitrator. You can't get more hypocritical. Celebrities and the industry people show themselves to constantly be of low moral character prone to all the traits that they moralize about. Another instance of do what I say not what I do. Screw those vapid narcissists.

As I predicted:

Hollywood and the studio system have thrown away any effort whatsoever in telling a good story and rewarding it. Instead, everything is about "Diversity". Oscar is so white, as one of the presenters joked. So we got to add some much-needed "Color" at any cost.

People are getting sick of it. At least I am.

For me the last Oscars left a bad taste in my mouth. In 2016 we had this stupid boycott of the Oscars because apparently not enough black people are winning. In 2017 we had record nominations for blacks, just blew the other record right out of the water. Gee, what a coincidence...

I never tuned in because I knew this one was bound to be just as political and preachy as the last. I've always known the Academy Awards was pretty fishy about who gets nominated and who doesn't, but I can't even pretend they're picking winners based on merit anymore, the illusion is shattered.

I don't feel it had all that much to do with the hollow-ringing "let's include women, even though we're the ones who have been 'excluding' them all this time" bit, but more to do with the fact that Hollywood and the academy are increasingly out of touch with mainstream America.

Left and Right of the political spectrum, people are increasingly tired of hearing rich stuck-up assholes talk about the importance of inclusion and standing up for the underprivileged, when they themselves are social elites. Even the ones who started from the bottom read like shills for rich assholes talking about people they haven't identified with for decades.

Its down for a couple of reasons. One is the show is just to long and well boring. The other thing is that its become to political, and they are pushing a political agenda. There's enough political agenda being pushed today as it is.

I've never really looked forward to it, but over the years I remember usually being pleasantly surprised to realise the Oscars is happening during the coming weekend, and if free I usually ended up watching as much of the coverage as was available. It was cheesy, sometimes braindead, and unfailingly mawkish, but also kinda sweet, like the Eurovision, and it always gave me the warm fuzzies.

This year, wild horses wouldn't have compelled me to watch one second of it. I turned off the news tonight the second Frances McDormand flashed up onscreen, because I knew exactly where it was going.

I don't enjoy spiteful, vindicative sexism against my gender. It fails to give me the warm fuzzies. That's why I'm out. Am absolutely thrilled to learn it might not just be me, but me too.

I think we’re seeing a paradigm shift where idea of “celebrity” is getting watered down/spread out on social media and other platforms besides TV/Movies. I do think political posturing plays a role, too, but not as much as people might like to think. Either way, I welcome the downfall of mainstream media.

As much as I love movies, the Oscars seems like a giant smarmfest. Why should I give a shit about a bunch of overpaid actors who are getting to attend parties that wouldn't let me in?
