Good on you for raising a serious issue mikesteane. In a video posted here recently, it mentions that when men go through the family court system, their suicide rates triple. Women's suicide stats do not change. It is estimated there are about 1000 divorce related suicides per year in the US.

Too bad all the depression therapists in my town only accept female clients. In my desperation, I've gone to therapists who specialize in marital counseling, or anger management, or emotional trauma, and it's clear that none of them have any idea how to approach full-blown depression. I'm pretty sure most of them were just reading back things they memorized out of self-help books to me. I'll probably end up visiting my family for Christmas day, but it's going to be worse than if I just sat at home alone. It'll be at most fifteen minutes before somebody sneaks in a way to ask me why I'm "not doing anything with my life" because I haven't gone back to college or joined the military yet, and then the very next minute they'll be praising my elder sister for finally finding a man who's willing to have a relationship with her despite the fact that she's never held a job for more than a few months in her life. If I'm not building a lucrative career so that I'll some day be worthy of marrying a woman like my sister, there's clearly something wrong with me.

Depression is not just feeeeling sad (& you probably have very real just reasons to feel that way). Depression is a vicious self feeding negative feedback loop. Getting stuck there will make you physically sick & shut down your capacity to reason. If you are having thoughts of self-harm reach out for help! You are not thinking clearly.

If you aren't that far gone, then put yourself (your own problems) aside for a while & give your time away to anyone else in need. You don't have to be religious. By doing this (100% effort) you may gain a better perspective on your own situation (& find your new path out of the funk). You also get the reward of someone else's appreciation.

Never ever kill yourself.

Absolutely! Don't give in to the chaos. Having your whole world kicked out from under you isn't the end, it's just change. Change with a mountain of suck, but still change. No matter how much you try or how careful you've been. In some places, the divorce rate is upwards of 80%, and you're just going to catch it as it goes around. It's a life change that you hope to avoid, but as Uncle Sugar increases his support of single mothers, You are not just a walking wallet, you're a walking target.

And do you know why? Because you are the source of all wealth for these parasites. They don't make any money, they have to steal yours. Just because they claim legality doesn't make it so. If you get into a pissing contest with CPS you're probably going to lose just for this reason. Again, it's not the end of the world, it's just change.

Of course there's bright/spots too. The dark one that got me most is losing my 'why'. Why do I do any of this crap, (I think about this every time Uncle Sugar asks for his 'cut'.) if there's nothing in it for me. No home, no family, virtually a slavery/prison sentence... so WHY? The good news is that you've been kicked out of your life, so you get another. Just like being in High School again. (Maybe that's not so bright...hmm.)

I'm more than prepared for the downvotes, but this is a load of crap. You're making false assumptions that "things will pick up". For some it might, for others things might only get worse. You have no way of knowing that and stating it like a fact if flat out lying. You mentioned "some of them have led very satisfying lives" while ignoring the many that lived completely miserable lives.

Suicide is a personal choice. Only you can determine if your life is still worth living and no one else has any right to demand you live a life that you do not find worthwhile.

I don't think telling suicidal people this helps them. A lot of suicidal people feel they have no control over their life. Men in this situation have a lot of people telling them what to do. Is adding another to the mix helpful?

Things will pick up.

Men in this situation often despair because they have been promised ideal things growing up which failed to come through. This may be perceived as a similar false promise.

The simple truth is we do not know if things will pick up. But they MIGHT, and that's better odds than death, where things definitely won't (unless, y'know, Soul Society exists and I can become a Shinigami) so life has better odds for hapipness and experiences.

There are many men alive today who decades ago considered suicide but resisted. Some of them have led very satisfying lives.

My guess is suicidals generally know this. But they will think "well those who ended up happy are rare, and probably weren't as sad as I am"

If you feel you are at risk of suicide, reach out.

Again: telling someone what to do. Many have been hurt reaching out. What they need is not being told to reach out, but being reminded that opportunities to reach out exist in a variety of places which might give them different and more pleasant outcomes than their past attempts which may've been disappointing.

If you are at risk make plans now to make sure you are not alone at Christmas.

I don't think that's a good idea, necessarily. Christmas experiences are not always good. If someone has a shitty Christmas that isn't up to their expectations, they might an hero on Boxing Day (or perhaps New Years). People should seek out social opportunities as they wish to and not feel some pressure to do it on holidays like "I better or I might die!" because ultimately it's them who determines that, not if they can't get company on the occasions.
