'"Gendered approaches to education are extremely problematic," Martel said in a post on change.org.'

...But only when girls are disadvantaged.

'"Gendered approaches to education are extremely problematic,"

They need to teach men not to rape tho, right?

It was welcome news to Cash Cayen's mother, who said "we need to change the way our society thinks."

LOL apparently not...

'No Boys Allowed' day teaches girls about science, math

There are girls only classes and programs all the time. Boys are increasingly being placed as a low priority in education in general. We set aside one place to try to help our boys and here come the feminists.

The society that fails to invest in boys and men is a society that is doomed, indeed. That investment is the difference, in terms of societal development, security, and infrastructure, between the Western World and Somalia.

There are way more girls only classes.

Heard of male-only scholarships to college?

and bless those girls but where are they blessing our boys?

[–]DavidByron2 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If this had been a girls only class the same people condemning it would have cheered it.

It's really bizarre to see anything discriminating against girls these days, so I wonder how this came about. It's a black swan event. I tried to get the other side of the story but nobody seems to be telling it. At any rate this girl is apparently a poor fit for the class since she's always at the library and this class is for people who have reading problems, which presumably is the last thing she has. Perhaps they could have better explained to her that she probably would be bored by the class.

Poor reading levels are much more a boys issue of course and I assume the subject matter was picked to interest boys. Maybe they have an equivalent for girls too. But there's just no reason to split the classes by gender. Some girls will like to read about robots (presumably including the one in the article) so why exclude them? Silly.

Yet last year schools had to fight to include boys in nationwide initiatives. The whitehouse partnered with google for the xmas tree lighting last year which by default left boys on the sidelines.

Encouraging girls and women into the profession should not mean excluding other, inspired, makers.

Equality when it's convenient, special privileges the rest of the time.

Even though girls have been performing better in school for decades, government favor girls with girl-only schools, girl-only scholarships, feminists study programs, etc. Do one thing for boys and the feminists scream 'sexism'.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Girl? Girl's cunt of a mother is more like it. Everything she is quoted as saying reeks of feminist bullshit. I hope the kid manages to avoid being turned into a misandrist turd by mommy dearest, but her chances aren't good.

I would like to see an end to all the "boys only" and "girls only" classes.

[–]Dnile1000BC 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

By default, the education system treats boys as defective girls. Thus, mix gendered classes are in reality catered for girls only.

[–]indigoanasazi 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Boys seriously do better though in an all-male environment.

[–]Men13 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

As do girls (although if I recall - boys more so than girls). Might be a gendered environment is actually better for everyone.

[–]Sinisus -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

School is supposed to prepare you for real life. People should be able to work together with the opposite gender in the workplace. How is that going to work out if we make all education gender segregated?

[–]Men13 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

There is more to "prepare for real life" than working with people. It's part of it - yes, but it's not everything.

Knowing how to read better, being able to understand and write reports better, having confidence, having more knowledge etc. is also important.

Now, it's possible that "being around people of the opposite gender" is more important than everything else in the "prepare for real world" department. But I'd be surprised if it's true.

[–]Sinisus -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Why is it either or? Should we have gender segregated reading classes supplemented with mixed "coexistence skills" classes? Why not learn both at the same time? If you have a problem functioning together with other people, you'll have to face that sooner or later. What if research shows that white kids learn better without black kids in the class?

[–]rottingchrist 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Why not learn both at the same time?

Because as said upthread, boys tend to do well in an all-male environment? If the aim is to educate boys well and that works better in an all-male environment why not segregate the class and have your coexistence skills class separately? That works too.

[–]Sinisus -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

How do we know it is the gender mix and not the teaching style being applied in those classrooms? And how do we deal with the "atypical" boys and girls? You don't have to downvote me just because you disagree, by the way.

[–]rottingchrist 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How do we know it is the gender mix and not the teaching style being applied in those classrooms?

Did they change the teaching style or material when teaching an all-male class?

And how do we deal with the "atypical" boys and girls?

Atypical in what sense?

[–]Sinisus -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't know what factors the research studies were controlled for. So I'm just asking.

With "atypical" I mean that you could have a girl that learns better in a male environment and vice versa.

[–]rottingchrist0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

With "atypical" I mean that you could have a girl that learns better in a male environment and vice versa.

Policies are usually formulated according to general trends. A few individuals may go against the trend, but I think there are other solutions to that problem than disadvantaging a whole group.

[–]Men13 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why not learn both at the same time?

Because learning them both at the same time means learning at least one of them much much worse?

What if research shows that white kids learn better without black kids in the class?

What if research shows that black kids learn much much better without white kids in class? What if you show that when black kids learn without white kids, then the chances of them ending up in prison falls by 90%? Will you still force them to learn with white kids, because it's "better for them"?

[–]Sinisus -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So kids should be sheltered from the real world, get grades that don't reflect their actual performance in real life and then get a surprise when they join the workforce and have to actually work together with other people? Why not make them accustomed to the environment they are going to live in for the rest of their lives?

[–]Men13 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Kids already are sheltered from the real world. By your logic - we should force kids to live on their own, have a job (or become homeless), pay for their own food and cook, and try to find their own "work/study balance".

But we don't do any of that. They don't get even a taste of the "real world" until they're out of school (out of college for those who go there).

"real life" is in no way even similar to "childhood". There virtually nothing comparable between the two.

But you don't advocate for any of that for kids. So why do you see this different?

then get a surprise when they join the workforce and have to actually work together with other people?

What if it turns out they work better with other people if they were in segregated schools?

We know that people who go to "all male" or "all female" private schools actually do better "in life". Now, obviously this has to do with these private schools being very high-end (and expensive) schools. But maybe part of it is the segregation?

Do you think maybe we should check that? Or maybe your ideal are more important to you than what reality might be?

[–]Sinisus 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your example is absurd. Putting children on the street to be homeless is in no way comparable to putting boys and girls together in a classroom.

Until I read a study that shows gender segregated kids fare better in life, because of the segregation, and not other factors, I'm sceptical. But I'm all for doing more research on the topic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"School is supposed to prepare you for real life."

If getting lower marks and harsher punishments while being drugged with Ritalin more so than girls is what you call "preparing them for real life".

[–]ExpendableOne -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe the answer there isn't to exclude women and isolate boys, but to fix the mixed environment and address boys/girls instead.

[–]bantrain7 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would like to see an end to all the "boys only" and "girls only" classes.

Depends. There is a reasonable argument that gender segregated education produces better results. But I'd definitely prefer fully integrated education to a situation where only one gender has special classes.

[–]Juan-man-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yup same here. No special treatment for anyone. Give access to all children to the opportunity to learn.

[–]SupremeAuthority 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They're going to fall in love with her and then when they criticize her, shes going to cry.

[–]DirtAndGrass 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's a tough call,

I feel there needs to be equal opportunity for everyone - that this is a valid protest.

however i also feel that sometimes, for education, boys and girls should have the opportunity to be separated.

I also suspect that there would not be enough interest in a girls only program with the same curriculum, in Timmins (~40k people)

[–]loddfavne 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I also suspect that there would not be enough interest in a girls only program with the same curriculum, in Timmins (~40k people)

My experience is that either you keep the few tomboys out of something, or you'll see that the boys won't bother to show up at all. The political correct answer is to allow girls everywhere where the boys are. The end-result is that the boys leave those places.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A class designed to help boys catch up with literacy and this girl thinks she can insinuate herself into the fold in the name of "grrl power" and "Equal Rights"?

[–]LooneyXLovegood 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The reason she wanted to join is because they didn't have a girl equivalent. If they had a Boyd only robotics and a girls only robotics this wouldn't be an issue. Most boys only activities actually teach kids shit whilst girls stuff is mainly dance and art. That is why she wanted to join. If we had science and math based gendered activities for both sexes it would all be a nonissue.

[–]CarbonBlob78 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Entitled little b*tch.

Yes, I know she's only nine, but it seems we start them young now. Next up - "why can't I enter the male restroom??"
