Higher earner pays alimony generally, in my state there is an actual mathematical formula. There are other factors such as imputed income (what you are capable of making, have made in the past, etc.) and circumstances like disability.

Child support depends on custodial agreements and other expenses like health insurance, and also has a formula as guidance. Lower earner will still pay if the higher earner has full custody, but the split will be proportional to income.

Here is the thing, family law has a clause in it called "any other relevant factors" which means the judge can do whatever the hell they want. Guess which gender gets fucked over because of that?

In my state it’s a mathematical formula but primary custodian always gets the money. So if ex wife makes the good money you will still pay her, but your amount will be a lot less.

From what I understood of the guidelines when I was calculating my own child support (I assume it varies from state by state) - they take the combined income of both parents and determine how much it would cost to raise that child to the same standard of living as if both parents were still together. Then the responsibility is split between how much each would contribute from their own salaries.

Then deductions are made based on what you would be providing automatically through your own parenting time through the custody agreement, among other deductions that you and a good lawyer could work into your case.

The higher earner would pay the difference. And they go on potential earnings, so if you lose your job and end up taking a massive paycut then it’s too bad, you have the potential to make more money so you still owe it.

Basically if you work your ass off your whole life to make good money and be a provider, and you fall for someone with no ambitions in life… be prepared for a massive child support bill.

In your example, your ex would be responsible for a larger portion of the child support with the new salary, but your potential earnings would still be $100,000 so be prepared that your responsibility might still be based on the higher amount since you can possibly get a different job. If she has more parenting time through the custody agreement (which is usually the case), then she might not owe you anything even if she makes more. Her deductions may cover the difference.

I think you'll find women prefer to leave when he is making more money than her, rather than risk paying him alimony.

In the US only about 10% of divorces involve alimony from the higher earning spouse.

Child support goes to the parent with primary/full custody, and thus most of the expenses.
