There are studies putting the false accusation rate anywhere from 2% to 90%. I think it’s clear the rate is higher than the low end often quoted by feminists, but the fact is none of the studies are very good studies.

While I give the number of studies showing about 40% a bit more credence than the extremes, I simply don’t think we have reliable information.

Well there’s no doubt the “award winning actress” in the Mark Pearson case was lying through her teeth: and she’s still protected from being officially named and shamed and isn’t an official liar and perjurer. The same goes for Liam Allen’s accuser. And then there’s the “Mattress Girl” (whose “brave protest” is still “celebrated” by The Feminist Daily, aka The Guardian) and her fellow (my truth) accuser. And these are the quite obvious liars I can think of from the top of my head. And there are other famous cases where the claims are pretty doubtful: smell of covering reputations; or lashing out at someone.

Considering many actual victims don’t report as they don’t want to relive it, and hope to put it behind them, it would not surprise me in the least if a great proportion of actual complaints were knowingly false: false accusers are shameless by definition, and are hardly put off by reliving a traumatic experience since it didn’t happen.

Even if these claims were accurate, you cannot simply take something that happened under specific circumstances and conditions and apply it generally. This cherry picking is no better than Feminists claiming it's only 0.5% because they only consider false accusations which resulted in convictions...

It is an unknowable percentage. And it's unknowable for 2 reasons:

First, in order to put any population of rape accusations into either the "actual rape" or "false accusation" category, you need to be able to put each of the incidents in that population into one of the categories. The facts is, it is very, very rare that we have any certainty about any specific incident to know with any level of certainty which category that incident goes into. Even in cases where the accuser recants, there is no guarantee that it was a false accusation. It's possible that they just didn't want to deal with it any more, and it's the recantation that is false and not the original accusation.

Second, there are incidents where people can agree 100% on the facts of the incident, but still disagree on whether that incident belongs in the "actual rape" category or the "false accusation" category. Consenting to sex while intoxicated is the most common scenario for this challenge. Some people will automatically put it in the "actual rape" category if the woman had a few drinks. Others will put it in the "false accusation" category unless the alleged victim was incapacitated due to alcohol. If the focus was on legally-defined rape in a specific jurisdiction, this one could be alleviated. But laws differ between jurisdictions. In addition, when discussing the topic, many people use their own, personal, moral definition of "rape" that is frequently much more broad than the legal definition.

This thread presents some very good reasons to never talk to a woman, ever. At work I only engage in smalltalk, never anything personal. And although it's a fast-paced job where physical clashes are likely to occur(I've worked in warehouses with the same 'watch where you're going because I do not' attitude - gotta move, gotta make money) I always watch my.hand placement. Like it probably makes me look weird, the lengths I go to to not accidentally brush up on someone.

But I'd rather look like a weirdo than the alternative. Distance yourselves from them as much as you can.

Hard to tell. Anecdotally, lots of cops will tell you that at least half the ones they hear on the ground are obviously false.

None of the studies you mentioned had those rates based on the admissions of the accusers.

For example the study by McDowell / kibbled had the rates determined by a panel of 3 people that classified the incidents as true or false based on their best guess. This is a horrible way to do it.

The study by Kanin (Purdue) took reports from one police department that made women take a polygraph to prove they weren’t lying. This level of distrust and invasive procedure made women recant and say they no longer wanted to press charges because of how horrible the investigation was done. Then Kanin classifies all women who didn’t want to testify as false accusations. And no data was released to back this claim up so it can never be checked.

False accusations are a very real problem. And so is sexual assault. But lying and saying this many women admitted they lied is using junk science to try and lie to people. Be better than that.

Ugh, the usual arguing about how you can tell if an accusation is false. Allow me to weigh in. Here's a study, that PROVES WITH DNA that 25% of rape accusations were false. ( https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles/dnaevid.pdf ) Now, you might say that's 25% and not 50%, and you would be so WRONG pumpkinhead, because DNA only tests if you had sex, it does not test consent. In other words, this 25% only includes woman who accused a man of rape that they did not have sex with. It would not include men they had consensual sex with and accused them of rape. So this really verifies the 40 - 60% figure.

It’s about 5% to 10% according to FBI statistics on rape (even though the FBI has admitted that they don’t count some cases of “forced sexual acts” from women onto men as “rape”) but that means 5 or 10 men out of 100 cases is false. That’s 100 men for every 1,000 cases. It may be the minority, but that’s still thousands of men on a regular basis getting falsely accused, and that’s only of the cases that were reported. The amount of men falsely accused of rape and left to society to determine their fate is probably outstanding compared to the available data.

Rape culture is a travesty. At minimum, 70-80% of allegations absolutely false. The statistics show it. I believe in facts, not "advocacy" groups attempting to hide such facts.

We need better screening for those cases that are obviously false.

One solution is to polygraph the accusers. If they have nothing to hide and their claim is legit, then there should be no problem. The necessity for such a measure is in-line the how serious an allegation can be against a man falsely accused.

Look at the Ghomeshi case in Canada afew years ago. If the "victims" had been polygraphed from the onset then that guy and his reputation would have been spared. Instead, EVENTHOUGH HE WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY IN COURT AND THE ACCUSERS WERE PROVEN LIARS, he still carries the stigma of having been accused once of sexual assault. We need change.

I'm pretty sure that the number is higher than just 60%. Women give out false rape accusations like Oprah gave out gifts to her audience.

Question is nearly impossible to answer without data that nobody has and nobody can get. How many rape accusations don't get reported to police but are reported to other people or college boards or the like? How many times is it due to the victim seeing no point in lodging a formal complaint because the perpetrator is more popular and powerful than her, how many times is it a malicious act used to hurt someone or get out of trouble, and how many times is the victim sincere but mistaken about what happened (as in they remember something that wasn't what happened, or do remember what happened but not who did it)? You can't poll these numbers. A great deal of the false rape and sexual misconduct allegations we see today don't ever involve the police. There's no data for them.

But people who were actually victimized have reasons to drop accusations too. If something actually happened to you, constantly revisiting it and talking about it will just make you miserable, your number one priority is to just make it stop, so it isn't uncommon to decide "this isn't worth it." But if you're a malignant narcissist or a psychopath, a false rape accusation is a bottomless source of precious narcissistic supply, and you want to ride it as long as possible. Any super high profile rape accusation that becomes national news is much more likely to be fake because a real accuser has little reason to draw lots of attention, but a fake accuser wants to draw as much attention as possible. So then the impression you get from the big stories is that there's a much higher rate of false accusations than there really is!

Most rape accusations end in a place where you can't take a neat summary off the court records and say "we had x that were proven false and y that were proven true" because the quantity of "neither proven true nor false" dwarfs both of them. You'd have to look into the details of each one, which would involve a judgment call on each one, which is completely inappropriate for a meta-analysis.
