I can see the fairness in this, but it sounds like an expensive bureaucratic nightmare to actually implement. I'd rather see it based on typical costs of raising a child with the ability to add extra necessary expenses, like if the child has a health issue that requires medications, treatments, etc.

I find it strange. People who against this aren't against the government deciding how much single parents have to pay for a child.

Simple solution is simple: Make child support just like HSA accounts where the money can only be used for authorized purchases.

When calculating the money that both parties are responsible for for the child, BOTH parents pay into said account. None of this giving huge sums to one person for them to use as they see fit playing games with money's fungible nature.

Forcing custodial parents to actually pay as well to a 3rd party account would get the system fixed practically overnight and see to it that it's needs based rather than a raw percentage of one's income.

I immediately thought about WIC / "food stamps" cards when I saw the image. Now, there are still examples of food stamps/welfare fraud, but that's too much to talk about for responses to an image on reddit imo (but go ahead if you want - I like to read)

There is a problem I can foresee with using WIC type cards is that if everything a mother / father has to buy must be used through the card, a lot of merchants will have to include services that allow those cards to make payments. I'm TBH not sure if the cards just function like a debit card - I have seen a friend of mine on welfare use it, but I didn't ask all sorts of probing questions in order to stay polite.

I also looked at Canada - is this link up to date? We're still in the dark ages of giving welfare recipients money?
