Thanks for this. I was previously unaware that there had been such a distinct increase. That is important when considering causes... what happened in the sixties and early seventies? Cold war? Vietnam? Second wave feminism? I'll have to think on it some more though before I am comfortable with the conclusions.

Saw a post on this topic the other day that was pretty good, but more specific to the UK. Won't link it here since it's a source despised by the subreddit.

But, I would say that my guess would be that the dramatic increase had a lot to do with economic factors and other such things (including political and social factors); as you can see on page four, the rates have begun to descend for both women and men again (although women were always far lower when it comes to suicide rates--but there was a somewhat similar rise and decrease around the same time for them--the jump was just more dramatic for men).

Realistically, I would surmise that the high jump of suicides in the 60's had little to do with second wave feminism, and more to do with the overall environment in general (the myriad contributing elements).

Many would argue that feminism is worse now for men than it has ever been, so a lowering of the rates wouldn't be too consistent with that if the initial jump had primarily stemmed from feminism or things feminism-related. Drug use and abuse also went up pretty severely during that era, and drug use has a lot to do with a great number of suicides.

IIRC, men tend to abuse alcohol and drugs a lot more than women (could be wrong, but if memory serves, that is correct), and of course you have to consider the numerous other elements that play into these sorts of things.

Lives and the situations and factors which create them, and even end them, are so nuanced and varied that it'd be foolish to simply attribute that increase primarily to one thing. That's not to say, of course, that feminism had absolutely nothing to do with it (am sort of noting this because of another comment; not knocking them, though), but I wouldn't assume that it was heavily involved.

I'm sure that someone could do some objective research and figure it out, and they'd likely find that the things which most probably and heavily contributed were what you'd guess.

Surely the root of gender differences in suicide come down to the fact that a woman has an intrinsic value, whereas a man has to compete for status and hence sometimes fail

Feminist related stuff maybe has had an effect e.g. - women can do anything a man can (now there is no actual point to the male gender, you barely need any men for reproduction) and general lack of identity because in the media it's never about men
