Lisa: Dad, what if I were to tell you that this rock keeps away tigers.

Homer: Uh-huh, and how does it work?

Lisa: It doesn't work. It's just a stupid rock.

Homer: I see.

Lisa: But you don't see any tigers around, do you?

Homer: Lisa, I'd like to buy your rock.

The head of the wgea was forced by a senator, after many attempts to not answer, that they don't collect overtime hours.

The wgea website used to actually state that the data shouldn't be used to compare job against job let alone across all industries. It used to list all the reasons that would account for the pay gap.

Everything, right there in plain sight!

<shrug> they've now changed the website.

Other key pay gap drivers are caring for family and workforce participation (33 per cent) and the type of job and industry sector of employment (24 per cent).

This is sending off alarm bells for me. Research has consistently shown that differences in occupation should account for at least half of the wage gap, not less than a quarter. See here, here, and here.

I haven't read the full methodology of this Australian report, but if I had to guess I'd bet they did something similar to what researchers from the American Association of University Women as well as researcher like Francine D. Blau and Lawrence Khan have done in the past.

For example, the AAUW wrote a paper in which they claimed to have found that on average, women earn 82% as much as men one year after graduating college, but they go on to attempt to control for other variables including college major and occupation, as well as hours worked. They state, “after we controlled for all the factors included in our analysis that we found to affect earnings, college educated women working full time earned an unexplained seven percent less than their male peers did one year out of college.”

On the surface, this would seem to be compelling evidence for the wage gap. Occupation and hours worked are two of the most significant factors, and since the study looked at men and women one year after graduation there would hardly be much time for them to differ in areas such as experience, seniority, professional licensure, and so on, and yet controlling for all these variables only reduced the wage gap to seven percent.

Here's the problem, they used a data set that makes use of only 12 broad occupational categories. Seriously, 12 broad categories is not nearly adequate. Among the 12 categories is “other white-collar occupations,” which includes lawyers, judges, library occupations, design, entertainment, media, etc. Yet another of the broad categories was simply “other,” which includes food servers, military, athletes, construction, drafters, and so on. Comparing the earnings of two people, one attorney and one librarian, and then claiming to have controlled for occupation and attributing the differences in earning to gendered discrimination is asinine.

The Blau and Kahn paper used 21 broad occupational catgories.

For reference, the first two sources I listed earlier finding that occupation accounts for at least half of the gap each used roughly 2,000 occupation categories, and the third source is based on 171 college majors, which isn't particularly robust, but still leagues better than freaking 12..

TL;DR - The more thorough researchers are in detailing occupational categories, the more of the wage gap can be explained by occupation. Lazy feminist researchers have a history of using broad occupational categories, which leaves them with a larger unexplained wage gap, which they hastily attribute to discrimination. I suspect they did this in the Australia report.

Even within a relatively small category like lawyers you have large difference in pay, depending on what they specialize in, and how good they are at their jobs.

[–]TheDwiin 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

I've said it before and I'll say it again. One way to decrease this pay gap is to give men paternity leave equal to women's maternity leave. Even though companies can't use the time you took off against you, being gone 6+ weeks will affect your performance which can cause you to be passed up on raises, bonuses, and even promotions. By giving men paternity leave as well, not only will it allow men to bond with their new borns, it will also equal the playing field in the workplace.

[–]odysseytree 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Many men won't take paternity leave even if given a choice. They have the role to provide when their wives take maternity leave. Those men work extra hard to uplift the lifestyle of their family.

[–]TheDwiin 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Currently, sure, but a couple generations down the line where society encourages men to take paternity leave, can change that. But there is a second benefit to women Paternity leave for men has, and that's to take pressure of early childcare off the mother and help her recover from the ordeal of pregnancy.

[–]ApprehensiveMail8 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How would this change anything?

If person A and person B are both making pancakes, and person A is allowed to eat half of person B's pancakes, then person B will wind up having to make more!

It doesn't matter if the griddle favors person A or person B. It doesn't matter if one or both of them get to/ have to take a break from making pancakes when person A chooses to get pregnant.

The only way person B doesn't have to make more pancakes is if person A isn't allowed to eat pancakes they didn't make.

years back I worked with a woman, a senior director level, who went out on maternity leave for 6 months.

a couple of months into her leave, her VP quit and they promoted one of her peers to the role.

Suddenly this woman nobody had heard a peep from in months was in the office demanding to know why SHE hadn't gotten the promotion...when she wasn't even working or intending to come back to work for months.

she made such a problem out of harassing people, trying to get people on her side to sue the company that she was eventually fired.

I have no doubt that when she tells the story, she was fired for getting pregnant.

[–]Early_Inspector988 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Was she better at the role than the peer?

[–]NolanHarlow 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Doesn't matter. Most important ability is availability.

It's like asking if a star athlete is a better player than someone else, but the star is always hurt and the other guy isn't.

[–]Early_Inspector988 -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Not in management positions it's not. You can have all the availability in the world, but if you're shit at your job availability means nothing.

Except that's still discrimination and it's against the law. That's why she's pissed.

from my perspective both seemed equally qualified. the thing was she was a likeable and popular person, then she went full retard.

[–]Early_Inspector988 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So yes, she was discriminated against.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why would you assume that when I said "equally qualified"?

[–]dw87190 50 points51 points52 points 4 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

Given that fact that most industries hold women to lower performance expectations, and have lower standards in experience and qualifications for female applications, yet pay both genders the same hourly rate, there actually is a pay gap

Examples in Australia, retail and hospitality. A woman is more likely to be hired, simply for being a woman. She won't have to work as hard a man, but she'll still be payed the same. Punishment for misconduct and poor performance is far more lenient. Sexual harassment claims against her will dismissed, the man subjected to said sexual harassment will be mocked and threatened termination for speaking up. She's more likely to promoted, and doesn't even have to demonstrate competency in a supervisory or management role, because Australia has placed "diversity quotas" on the two industries

[–]Oncefa2 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

One study found that female workers were about 8% less productive than their male counterparts.

They still found a ~4% wage gap after accounting for that difference in productivity, but they weren't as thorough as some of the other studies in accounting for all the different variables here.

If you combined that 8% with something like the Korn Ferry study that found an average job for job differences of ~1%, I think you'd end up finding that men are under paid to the tune of about 7%.

This study found women 10 percent more productive. You never know which study to believe.

It probably depends on too many factors to accurately measure, unless you use the market itself as a proxy.

are under *paid* to the

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

A guy studies engineering starts a tech company and makes millions.. A girl studies gender courses and expects the same pay.. Why wouldn't there be a parity in their wages?

Why don't they account for education and what kind of work they do...

[–]jessi387 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well actually it’s not made up…. There is a pay gap….. women earn 15% more for the same work…. They were so close.

[–]rollypollyolie 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Every time I've ever been challenged on this I hit them with the if greedy corporations could pay women 70 cents on the dollar of a man then why would any man get hired ever? Cutting labour's costs by 30% is a big deal.......

Cause its not true/ the way the data is presented/ the graphs are shown it both excludes extremely important data points and then twists that narrative to fit their stance.

Remember as a kid in grade 6 when they showed you graphs with misleading data and asked the class how they interpreted it, its that kind of stuff but real life. And if your school never showed you how easy it is to manipulate data in your math class during a graphs and charts section then your are sorely unprepared for the real world and the info you'll be given online.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

According to the report, 91 cents of the hourly pay gap – or 36 per cent – cannot be explained using measurable data. As a result, the report’s authors to put a big chunk of the pay gap down to gender discrimination.

This is a classic logic fallacy "argument from ignorance", which means if you don't know what the explanation for something is, then you just make up anything you want because you can't prove it isn't.

They could have just as easily said the earning gap explanation was mind control influence by alien invaders.

Actually you might be on to something there. If we run with this we'll give you credit for the idea.

Thomas Sowell, long ago, pointed out the methodology of testing women's pay was wrong.

He stated that instead of comparing women against men, they should have tested married/LTR women against single women to find your pay gap.

[+]gamerlololdude -15 points-14 points-13 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This again. Pay gap refers to a more complex phenomenon than just paying men and women differently based on gender. There was a whole human rights research on it done in Canada I can link. It jumpstarted several laws to resolve inequalities.
