I am a 51 year old American so, obviously I was circumcised. To be honest, since it is the only thing I have ever know, I didn't waste much time thinking about it until a sonogram revealed that my second child was a boy. After reading up on it as much as I could I came to the conclusion that I would not subject my son to the procedure. My ex-wife was livid, as was just about everyone I discussed it with. The main argument I heard was basically "He'll be self conscious if he's the only one with a foreskin". Our OB even told us that it is better for a boy if his penis looks like his fathers'! I stood my ground and refused to sign the consent. I have not once in 13 years regretted my decision, and my son is healthy, well adjusted, and seemingly unconcerned because, once again, it's all he's ever known.

My responses to these people:

Actually, yes it does. One study showed that neurologically the baby's brain is permanently altered after the trauma. And a study in Scandanavia showed that cut men are lower in empathy than uncut men. But go ahead, inflict an unanesthestized mutilation on a child too young to understand anything other than it's just been born and is now in agony, and you see if that affects their life trajectory.

There's a religion TODAY that says to stone adulterers and gays to death, and then proceeds to go do it on a multi-nation-wide scale. You okay with that too?

I actually get the “I want him to look like his father” and the hygiene argument. I, too, want my son to be like his father and have good hygiene. That’s why I’m not going to circumcise him and instead teach him to wash his fucking dick. Seriously, it isn’t that hard. You’re going to need to teach him personal hygiene anyway.

I used to be in a women’s Bible study back in my home state. The lead gal and her husband were trying for kids. The other girls asked her if she had a boy if she would circumcise him. She, along with the other girls, agreed vehemently. Their argument was, “Otherwise we would have to clean it and touch it.” If your argument towards mutilating an infant’s genitalia is that you might have to touch it, you shouldn’t be having children at all.

To this day, I am still greatly disturbed by that comment.

Note: Also, thank you for including the bit about Jesus. Christians don’t need to circumcise. A true Jew—and Christian for that matter—is the one whose heart has been circumcised.

I’m reading about this as my 4 month old son naps in my arms. I can’t imagine how scary that procedure is for a tiny baby who had presumably been resting comfortably with his mother shortly before it took place. Then he’s suddenly with strangers who are hurting him. It is so heartbreaking to think of that happening to a sweet infant. Where is our empathy for boys and men?

I’m 15 and never got circumcised, I never really knew it was a thing until my 7th grade science teacher started shaming boys who weren’t circumcised. I paid no mind to it at the time, but looking back and knowing what I know now, it was pretty fucked up. She made me feel dirty just for being different and not conforming to what is expected of me. It’s not fair, we have just as much as a right to our own bodies just as much as any other girl.
