I started reading and was going to start listing off all the things in here that either were contradictory to the feminist movement, misrepresented, or just plain ridiculous. I got about four or five paragraphs in when I realized EVERY FUCKING PARAGRAPH is littered with trash. It would take so incredibly long to dissect this POS article.

To quote Banksy, "I was faced with that terrible thing when somebody shows you their work and everything about it is shit, so you don't really know where to start."

[–]dominotw 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol. What company in their right mind publishes anything about women in tech. There is no way to do it right, you will get raked over the coals regardless of the content.

Narrative is highly controlled.

All I could think about when I read these findings is how many men in tech will use this data as a reason to stop caring about diversity

Good, caring about diversity for diversity's stupid to begin with.

Good, caring about diversity for diversity's stupid to begin with.

It's a self-contradictory argument: These two groups are equal, but we we need diversity.

If the groups are equal, then adding different groups doesn't do anything.

If adding different groups does something, then they aren't equal.

[–]iainmf 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Diversity can only happen if groups are first segregated so they develop different culture and attributes.

If you homogenize everyone you can't have 'diversity'.

Actually, that's probably what you just said.

[–]Demonspawn 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not actually, altho that's another interesting argument.

If we have two groups, X and Y, and they are exactly interchangeable such that X = Y, then having a member of the group being X or Y makes no difference. As such, diversity (a mix of Xs and Ys) cannot provide any benefit over a group of all Xs or a group of all Ys.

For diversity to supposedly provide benefit, then it must stand that X != Y. That way, a mixed group will find that Xs provide benefit that Ys do not, and that Ys provide benefit that Xs do not.

But the problem is, they can't acknowledge that: once they do it opens the argument that Ys are just plan better than Xs at the job/task, or that the cost/benefit for Xs is such that a team is best served if Xs only make up some percentage of the team.

There’s no way to sugarcoat it. Lots more men are writing code than women.

When I read this, I hear that Stack Overflow doesn’t believe that I exist.

Huh? Are we reading the same thing? Is she that dumb?

[–]Krissam 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm gonna cite her as a source and claim rapists don't exist since lots fewer men rape than don't.

Stack Overflow, you have given men in tech ammunition for trivializing diversity outreach in their organizations.

Gender diversity, when boiled down, simply means fewer opportunities for, and more discrimination against boys and men.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Let’s start with some numbers. Only 5.8% of survey respondents identified as women (or, more specifically, “female”, because apparently Stack Overflow wants to know what kind of genitals you have)

what a bunch of misogynistic shitlords...they actually asked demographics questions in a survey about...well demographics.

I guess we're just supposed to BELIEVE women are underrepresented and underpaid in software development, without actually trying to gather facts like some kind of woman hating jerk.

I bet her code sucks.

[–]NPFFTW 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is this a fucking joke

[–]SchalaZeal01 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Apparently its discriminatory against people who don't like or care about science fiction to ask Star Wars or Star Trek. There's never a "don't know" answer I guess.

And despite breaking box office, apparently Star Wars is super fringe... or something.

Just because it's a male dominated field doesn't mean that there is really anything stopping women from going into this field. I'm female and I hate how everyone assumes that it's somehow more difficult to be a woman in IT. Last I checked, my peers care about what kind of genitals I have about just as much as your computer does.

Thank you stack overflow for telling the world. Yes we can be pushed around. https://medium.com/@jayhanlon/first-off-i-want-to-thank-you-for-taking-the-time-to-share-this-and-particularly-for-being-8c8138929210#.b2ri9ld2r

[–]DigitalDolt 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What the fuck. This guy is apologizing like he's somehow responsible for the lack of female programmers.

On the other hand I feel that if he politely told her to shove it, the tumblrinas would harass his employer until he got fired.

Joel Spolsky, one of founders of StackOverflow, wrote about his ideas on customer service on his blog: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/customerservice.html

He thinks that the company can never win the fight against unsatisfied customers and should always take the blame.

[–]expert02 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What the shit, I could barely make it through two paragraphs.

[–]rg57 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who is holding Stack Overflow accountable for their pathetic caving to this garbage?

[–]xNOM 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There’s no way to sugarcoat it. Lots more men are writing code than women. (ETA: this quote has been removed from the survey. It originally appeared in the section linked above.)

When I read this, I hear that Stack Overflow doesn’t believe that I exist.

This person is a moron...

[–]MalibuStayZ 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She is right though that this survey says little about the average developer as it suggests. It only says something about the average registered StackOverflow user who is willing to answer surveys.
