Yes and no.
When it comes to someone who is geniuenly depressed then absolutely "man up" isn't going to help
If they are bitching about it raining outside then yes, they should man up

Exactly, stop with the marxist feminist "we need to treat everyone the same!".

Eh. Depends on the situation. It's a gendered "grow up" it's not that damn demeaning. I tell women the same by saying actual patronizing things: "put your big girl panties on and handle it". I used to hear that one a lot as a teen girl. Lol If used when someone is overcoming something serious like suicide attempts, then obviously this is a horrible thing to say. If a boy was molested or faced trauma and is told to man up then I can see how that would mess him up worse. But if a young boy doesn't want to help with chores, do homework, or take responsibility, he may get told to man up or grow up. Daughters too. "Woman up" doesn't have the same snap to it, but it's catching on and there's nothing inherently wrong with either phrase.

I love telling women to 'get some balls.' Fun watching their heads explode.

The problem with deciding that words or phrases shouldn't be used anymore is two fold:
1) There are often underlying reasons for why terms exist, since people usually don't come up with terms randomly. Before you decide to get rid of a term, you should think about why the term exists in the first place. "Man up" seems to be a call to action for a man to honour his name in the face of some adversity, which most men appreciate (typically, men like such challenges). Of course it can be used negatively, but we have to compare both the good and the bad. Most people (particularly feminists) simply jump to the conclusion that terms are "outdated" because they don't like them, or they don't fit with their own narrow world-view, and never make the important argument for why they initially existed, as I have done.
2) Who are you to say what society should say? Language evolves on its own through consensus. Declaring that certain words should or should not be used is a form of fascism, since it is a minority of people trying to control the majority. You can make the argument for why it's not productive to say, but trying to force other people to adhere to your own language standards is wrong.

If I cannot say what society should say, then society cant tell me what to do.

I'd really like to see the evidence that shows this is such an epidemic that feminists are making it out to be, men don't solve their emotional problems by crying. They take their aggression and emotions out in healthy ways like hobbies which feminists are going out of their way to ruin.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points (4 children) | Copy Link
Some men, some men do cry and want to talk about their emotions. They’re men too, and so their behaviour is manly as well. You do you
[–]Lethn 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes exactly, I want people to stop telling me that I must have something wrong with me because I don't want to cry like they do.

The term is best translated as "do as i want you to do." Fuck it and anyone who uses it.
[–]xNOM 3 points4 points5 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes, let's all grow vaginas and talk about our feelings. That will solve everything. /s
Also, you know who really needs to man up? Women.
[–]dontpet 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Damn. I just had a vision of some new tech farmer growing vaginas. I hope I don't go through my day with that one.

I agree, “man up” is shitty. So is “be a man”.
It’s sexist language designed to reprimand men for not being “manly” enough. It’s an admission by the speaker that they have a prejudice regarding how they think men should act, and you’re failing to meet their expectations. It’s always condescending.
Men don’t have to be tough. Men don’t have to be strong. Men don’t have to bear the burden placed on them by others. And these sexist phrases push the expectation men should be these things.
I am not your ken doll. I refuse your expectations.

I disagree. If you allow your life to be run by your feelings, it will be a shit life. Why do you think so many women are miserable? Sure, men can have feelings. Venting and outlets for feelings are good, at the right time and place, and with the right people. Working at solving your issues is even better though.
[–]Rigbot350 6 points7 points8 points (3 children) | Copy Link
I agree but disagree. Yeah you shouldn’t let your feelings control your life but the term “man up” is telling a man that he isn’t good enough of a man even though they probably are. The term is used in a different context and tone than most people think
[–]mgtowolf 4 points5 points6 points (2 children) | Copy Link
Possibly my view is colored by my life experience. On the jobsite, people are told to man up if they are whining about personal bullshit, while everyone else is trying to get their work done. Your co-workers on the job are not your best friends, or your shrink. They don't really want to hear it, they got their own problems. That's how it is on the construction site at least. No idea about other places of work.
[–]Rigbot350 3 points4 points5 points (1 child) | Copy Link
There is a difference between whining or venting out of the blue with someone who doesn’t care and talking to someone about it. When people don’t care enough to help someone they just say “man up” because it’s the easy option. The saying means to suck up with your personal problems and move on. This is a problem when someone has mental issues which is one of the reasons why men have a higher suicide than women
[–]mgtowolf 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
That's part of the right people part I mentioned. Just because someone knows who you are, and you know who they are, doesn't make you friends. People don't have any obligation to help you, or listen to you, I am not sure why so many people expect this. A lot of people get extremely uncomfortable talking about feelings and personal shit, and are only willing to deal with that discomfort for the few people they really trust.

The most recent time a woman told me to 'man up' was because I didn't want to crawl into an unlit crawlspace to catch a possum. I responded with 'woman down', to which she responded with a confused look followes by asking 'WTF is that supposed to mean?'. I said 'It means shut your mouth, and let me think of something.' Sure enough, she didn't take that well. That made me smile.
[–]androk 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
The term should be gender neutral, Grow Up. When bad shit happens sometimes you just gotta deal with it, you have to grow up.
[–]mrpoopybutholole -1 points0 points1 point (0 children) | Copy Link
Man up, this shouldn’t hurt your feelings
