I want very much to help you with your dissertations and your theses. I love this job, and it is a thrill for me to watch you succeed under my guidance. But you need to do something for me:

Please stop coming to me with research proposals about traditional views in domestic violence that ignores (or blames) men. Or sexual assault. Or career development for women (but not men). Stop coming to me with proposals about female body image interventions or "sexism in higher education." Please stop with all of the 'female empowerment' proposals of any kind.

You've heard me speak about these issues in my classes. I'm rather skittish about it, but you know where I stand. The needs for men and boys are so much more salient. And they are so neglected in our profession.

Come to me with questions about the emotional and practical needs of your sons and husbands and fathers, who maybe you do not have anymore. And I will help you to understand, and help you to produce a study that might really make a difference and help someone.

Come to me with a desire to really learn, and I will walk through fire to help you. If you come to me with a political or ideological agenda, then I will send you elsewhere. My conscience will not allow me to support that kind of work anymore.
