OP shared the article. Alimony makes sense in rare circumstances; so I'm glad the concept exists for those cases, but it definitely should not be the norm. It is especially baffling to read about alimony payments made when one or both spouses are a celebrity and the poorer ex's net worth is already many times greater than the average person's net worth. I'd they have millions, how do they require thousands more per month to survive?

Most things related to divorce are complicated. But the goal of alimony should be to make up for the opportunity cost lost that someone had as a result of raising a child instead of furthering their career or education.

Alimony was for back when women had no education and most companies wouldn't hire a woman. Plus, there was no social security, so if a woman was unemployed she had no safety net. Alimony was a tradition to allow her to still feed herself after the divorce. However, the times have changed, and after a divorce a woman is perfectly capable of taking care of herself, plus if worst comes to worst there is social security. Since it still exists it creates a society where there is no need try and work through any problems to make a marriage work, if it isn't absolutely perfect or you get bored, just divorce.
