In 10 years time, campus rape hysteria will be viewed the same way the "Satanists are molesting children everywhere!" hysteria in the 80's is viewed today.

confirmation bias. activists look to promote stories that sound horrifying, and where the campus and police did nothing, to show just what an enormous problem campus rape is. then it turns out the story is full of holes or completely made up, because the accuser is lying or exaggerating to impress the activists.

Some groups advocated to take the womans claim she has been raped as fact. That makes it easy for women to lie about being raped. Of course by the time it turns out she has was a lying liar her lie already turned into a whole thing.

Nor is it an argument that accusations should never be believed. Nor is it an argument that rape victims should be ashamed to come forward. It’s only to say that generally speaking, an alleged victim eager to generate publicity about what happened to her may require more verification than an alleged victim who is reluctant to come forward.

Due process. It's in the Constitution. It works. Throwing it away is probably the main answer to the question in the title.

If I were to hazard a guess, it's because none of them were true. That, right there, tends to make most cases fall apart.

Feminists have been tenaciously fighting to make these not-true cases somehow true, in the hope that these stories of raped women can be used to their advantage

Unfortunately for their belief system, what they wish reality were like and what it actually is are two completely different things.

Because they aren't based on facts, evidence or any of that oppressive patriarchal shit ( /s ) but on sheer misandry and hatred of all men. Men are all privileged, toxic rapists by definition, or at best "Schrödinger's rapist" meaning they haven't actually raped yet but they inevitably will, it's only a question of time. And if an innocent guy tries to defend himself from a false accusation, well, that's the same sense of entitlement that drove him to rape in the first place. Even if he has a cast iron alibi that shows he was on the other side of the world at the time of the alleged rape, he may gain from the experience of being falsely accused and it's not a pain he should be spared.

In a nutshell, it's a radfem war on men, facts, fairness and justice be damned.

There is probably a selection bias in effect: the more tantalizing, confidential, and disgusting the story, the more likely it is going to capture the interest of more and more people, and therefore be likely to become "high profile" by getting media attention. Being raped by 7 guys on a bed covered in broken glass, for example.

Then, when they become high profile, these stories will get much more scrutiny than other cases.
