Female here, long time lurker. Got a nasty example of this from my own life. My parents began their divorce around when I was twelve. The courts assumed I would be better off living with my mother, as courts often do, and so I was shipped off. It was an unstable environment, we lived in 6 houses and 2 countries in less than a 2 year period and I switched schools 3 times. I should point out that this entire time, she was not working. She didn't work for a minute. Instead, she lived off child support and alimony - the funds of which she used mostly to fuel her alcoholism.

It took over a year and a half for the custody case to be reconsidered in court. Even then, it took a lot of money that my father no longer had (due to the conditions of the prior divorce, he had to pay my mother the entire worth of the house - having to take out 2 mortgages), and a lot of hassle.

This system is absolutely enraging to me. Not only did the courts favor my mother in the initial divorce case, but they blindly handed sole custody of me to her and ignored my father's points that she was unfit for child-rearing until years later. Courts seem to be under the impression that, because the woman is the one who births the child, she somehow has more rights to it / is better capable of caring for it. Pardon my french - but what the hell?

My poor kids' opportunities to have friends over have dried up since the divorce and my winning custody. One family lets their daughter come over to play with my oldest daughter, but for my son and youngest daughter, playing has to be hosted at their friends' house or at a neutral site like a playground.

I have a 3 year old daughter and a two year old son. There are times during the weekend that we only need say, milk. So, I'll take one of the kids with me to the store so we can have bonding time. I don't know that it's happened but I can't help but feel like I'm being stared at like I'm "weekend dad" for being out with one of my kids alone. Ah the society we live in.
