For this post I'm using the UK definition of disability, which is a physical or mental impairment which has a substantive or long-term effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities.

I'm curious about what role you think disability has on your dating choices and behaviour in relationships. You don't need to have a disability to answer (although you may want to remind yourself that basically everyone acquires a disability at some point) as I'm also interested in your attitude towards disability in a partner.

I've had dyspraxia/DCD and an essential tremor since I was born, which affects my movement and sensory experience of the world, although I don't know any different. Certainly it can be quite off-putting in the dating market as the way I move through the world is described as "weird" and clunky rather than graceful and attractive, and as I seem physically stupid I can get babied and seen as a non-option. (I've heard this is a far bigger problem for those who use visible aids.) In a partner I really value patience and empathy, as people without these traits tend to clash with my condition, and my experience makes these things attractive.

I've often seen the opinion that disabled people should date others with the same condition or a similar one, and I'm interested on your take on it. To me personally this makes no sense as I think partners should be complimentary and bring strengths the other lacks. For example, there are certain household tasks I struggle to perform and it's helpful for my partner to do those while I do others that okay to my personal strengths. My sister-in-law and her boyfriend both have depression and seem to be in an echo chamber of making each other worse which I don't think is helpful. I would certainly consider dating someone with a different condition and I have done (autism). That said, I know we can't control who we're attracted to even if it's not ideal, for certain conditions like dyslexia it likely doesn't have that much of an impact, and for others like deafness it may even be desirable.

Some things to think about:

1) Does disability impact your partner choice? Do you think it should? Does it depend on the type of disability? Should disabled people date other disabled people?

2) Does disability impact the way you conduct relationships? Are romantic relationships anything special in this respect? How might your relationship change if you or your partner were to acquire a disability, and does it depend on the type?

3) If you have a disability, how has it impacted your dating life? If you acquired one over the course of your life, how have things changed?
