Heaps -HEAPS - more time, effort and resources needs to be ploughed into mental health. Young men and the elderly are the two groups most likely to kill themselves. Anyone with half a brain can tell you that that's where the dough needs to go.

I have sympathy for the guy but none for her. Fuck her. Whatever emotional suffering she is going through now is much needed, hopefully she changes her views as a result of it. Some people need to hit rock bottom to realise how much of a fucking turd they are.

No one deserves to lose a loved one.

Mental health is a very serious issue and hopefully Burchill will now become an advocate for it. The people I hate the most are those that try to trivialize serious issues by saying issues under their purview are "more important".

I get that Burchill hated MRAs. I sense that her self-described "callous" statements, that:

the voluntary exits of a few hundred able-bodied young men each year are best dealt with as private tragedies rather than a public concern. Let them go.

Were made just to shut-up men's rights advocates. At the end of the day, even though you hate the MRA, they do bring up some legitmate issues. Trying to "win" against the MRAs by saying "violence against women" happens more often and therefore "male suicide" is unimportant is just non-productive.

More people die a year in Africa out of infectious diseases than people in Western society die of cancer. That doesn't mean we take out all cancer funding and put it into infectious diseases.

Another point of irony in this is that in that article, she talks about girls suffering from eating disorders and such as being more worthy of our sympathy - and the leading cause of death for girls aged 15-19 around the world is now ... suicide. (The leading cause of death for boys in that age group is road injury)

Would she have sympathy for all those girls who commit suicide or would she think 'nothing can be done'? I'm guessing she'd have a different view than she'd have for the boys.

I think this is an example of allowing perceived injustices stew you in hate.

All that said, I'm very sorry about the death of her son.

It's always tragic when someone chooses to end their own life. The fact that this poor guy was related to her doesn't make his death any less awful.

I also know that she will probably read and reread and reread those words a million times in the next few months. When she shuts her eyes, I think she'll probably see those words etched on her son's casket. Even if you wanted to kick her when she's down, I doubt anything you say could be worse than knowing what she herself said about her son's suicide.

It's very sad. I agree with a lot of the points the MRAs bring up. However, it would reflect very poorly upon the movement to use this as an opportunity to gloat. Many men do not seek the help they need for depression because of social pressure to be strong and "fix it themselves." We need to help end the shame and stigma of depression: It is not a weakness, and there is help. Furthermore, although it may rustle some conservative feathers, I'd like to bring up the issue of firearms. More male suicide attempts end in deaths because, for various reasons, men are more likely to end their lives using guns. Tighter restrictions of guns could prevent some of these tragic deaths.

I am feeling sorry for her son. The extent of my sympathy for her is as pronounced as her sympathy for young men who have committed suicide.

She really is a disgusting excuse for human being but at the same time her son just killed himself. but this case is stretching my powers of empathy to their structural limits. half of me is like karma a bitch the other half is deeply sorry for her loss regardless.

Save your sympathy for the real victim here... her son. He was the one who was in such pain that oblivion seemed like a good alternative. Probably being raised by a radical feminist had a lot to do with that.

So fuck her. She needs my sympathy like a fish needs a bicycle.

Who is this Burchill woman and what's the context here? I take it she wrote a negative article about suicide years ago and now her son took his own life. Is your question whether to gloat about this or?

Its possible to do both. A loss of life in this way is never a good thing and should not be celebrated but it should also be viewed as a learning experience to help get to the bottom of suicide by men.
