In couples with one working partner, the working partner is usually the man. The study doesn't seem to take this into consideration.

funny I value my wife's opinion on finances. She is the CFO Im the CEO. She also is a CPA so it makes sense.

I spend money like a madman sometimes.. when it gets too crazy she gives me the look "You are spending too much this month"

Woman thinks the family doesn't have enough money: nags husband to make more money.

Man thinks family doesn't have enough money: works harder/smarter to try and improve his earning potential.

Female breadwinner doesn't think family has enough money: works harder and earns more but this increases the status gap between her and her husband which makes her dissatisfied and him insecure.

The problem is that women who like to spend all their husband's money married the wrong man. They need to marry men who enjoy "financial domination" instead, then everyone will be happy :) :

Might be true but it doesn't concern me since I wouldn't date a woman with strong materialist tendencies. I prefer girls that enjoy the simple things in life.

This is more or less proof of the fact that women become "westernized" or radicalized in a way to the established system norms. A litmus test for the degree of hypergamy present in the woman.

For the ever unobtainable unicorn, these things don't matter. For good girl gina, they're important to the point of survival and maybe to the effect that things impact the ability to go out and get some fresh air in the relationship. For a hypergamous branch swinger, this value is MUCH more sensitive. To the point where if things even SMELL like danger it's time to bolt.

This jives with my belief that women in general are more likely to bitch and moan about money, and go out of their way to make hubby's life hell if their rampant, whorish materialism isn't sated (and it never really is).

This is a bit of a simplistic view. Women require comfort and security in the long-term because they almost always want an ideal environment to raise children. We have been taught to associate this with a certain type of bourgeois Western materialism. When they say this...

"I want a man who's ambitious" and "has goals in life" and is "driven"

It is because subconsciously they want a high status man for reproductive reasons. It's not related to sexual attraction, it is really their genetic impulses driving this feeling.

This seems to be a logical consequence of the idea that men feel responsible for being the breadwinner, and women feel the same way.

Ergo, when a man perceives himself to be not making good money/dealing with fiscal problems, he still tries to be a good husband and please his wife however he can. Ergo, "wives' outcomes" are not damaged.

Whereas when the wife thinks the husband isn't holding up "his end of the bargain" by being a good provider, she'll be angry at him because its "his fault."

Oh come on, that's just immensely loaded language. Everyone can be, and most people are, greedy and materialist. People would (ceteris paribus) take more over less. People always want more satisfaction versus less satisfaction and for most people, satisfaction is dependent in a significant degree by material factors.

Men just get brow-beaten into not 'rising above their station' and to think that they don't 'deserve' extra material wealth. And that what they make should be for their family, not for themselves. Compare this to women, who are generally raised with the idea that even Cinderella will eventually marry Prince Charming and become a Princess.

Concern for material wealth and desire to enjoy more personal comfort is normal. Calling it "rampant whorish materialism" is utterly unfair.

That said, I think the conclusion indicates that gender traditionalism is still holding fast. Most women still demand a responsible man to take care of them and love them and spoil them rotten and be the breadwinner.

Clearly Friedan's rather rosy picture of the labor market (as a place where women would find independence, self-fulfilment and satisfying careers) was only true for a modest proportion of women. If all women would be happier with jobs, we'd have far more dual-income families and far more hardcore career-women.

Basically, women are being treated now (in jobs) how men have been treated for a long time and they're realizing it isn't a coke-filled privilege-party.
