I really hate hen pecking, too many guys endure it and too many women do it. Some study showed that the men's blood pressure goes up like in a war zone. It should be treated like a man hitting his women, verbal domestic violence should not be accepted. Friends don't let friends be beta.

Friends don't let friends be beta.
You deserve a thousand upvotes just for this.
[–]weirdlywalking(・_・ )[S] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I've heard that too! I've even seen studies that show that the psychological effects after emotional and physical abuse are essentially the same.
[–]alreadyredschoolRational egoism < Toxic idealism5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
And that's why we should treat it the same and not accept abusive behavior from our partners. And we should support friends.
In addition to "He hit me and I took the kids with you can we sleep at your place?" we should do "Yo bro, she was mean and hurt my fee fees do you have an empty couch for me?"

Just thinking about this paradigm makes me laugh at the implausibility of that happening, lol. I can only imagine the ration of shit anyone engaged in that conversation would get (I'm not saying that's right, but that's just how it is).
[–]alreadyredschoolRational egoism < Toxic idealism3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's what I intended to show, it will never happen. Sometimes women stay despite getting hit, and her friends bail her out, friends should do that, the less verbal abuse is socially accepted the easier it will get.

Modern Western society is like this.
I don't want to pull you away from your initial point, but I do think the reason why men have such high rates of depression and suicide, even men who are comfortably middle class, is because of how much we are passively coerced. Natural behaviour for men is to be jocular, fight, compete, fuck, take drugs live a quite simple life in fact.
It's weird, feminists often point out that White men have easy lives and so should not complain, but in many ways, an easy life (capitalist rat race) is the most cruel and the most unnatural compared with being a gangbanger or some other nutty shit. I genuinely think this is why well educated Muslim guys from rich families sometimes give up the prospect of top careers to join Islamic State and charge round the desert or nerdy kids in America do school shootings. It's an extreme outburst which is a direct result of humans being forced to give up the primal part of who they are.
White people, politicians etc act shocked but I think we are the mad ones more than we like to think.
EDIT: In the UK there is a big controversy over a father who took his children out of school to go to Disneyland, the judge let him off and it's opened up this debate. On Sky news I watched as arguments were put forward such as it undermining the authority of the school and it teaching the children that living on your own terms is something you can do. I was shocked.

I spent ten years in the military as a combat engineer; my specialty was explosive demolitions and mine warfare; I helped prepare live fire exercises with battle simulations, and participated in test runs using ball ammo and frag grenades.
I left to go to law school; I lasted 4 years as a divorce attorney because it was too "stressful".

It sounds crazy but I get it.
Even if you have the raw intellectual ability to pass the degree and the professional exams, there is something crushingly unnatural about the whole lifestyle. It's besides the point, but I don't really understand why the government has a monopoly on marriage to begin with, that in itself adds to the absurdity.
[–]Entropy-7Old Goat0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
why the government has a monopoly on marriage
TL;DR: to protect women from themselves.
Because women have as much foresight as a goldfish and/or are as lazy as tree sloths. They are as naïve as guys about thinking that love/marriage will last forever so they don't consider the possibility of divorce at the time. If they do, they won't take steps to protect their own interests by negotiating a marriage contract to clearly define what they will get coming out of the marriage if it doesn't work out. They don't want the hassle, and they don't want to risk losing Mr. Right with nasty talk about the possibility of divorce and what's in it for her if they break up.
Instead, the shoe has been put on the other foot so that the government writes your marriage contract, and then it is on the guy to try and opt out of it, but if it comes time to drop the hammer a judge can throw it out to protect the woman from her own foolishness in signing an agreement that is "unfair".
Guys, largely being goldfish and tree sloths themselves, and not wanting to risk losing their precious snowflake, won't take it upon themselves to even try and protect their interests but would rather just let the government decide for them. Hence, only something like 3% of marriages have prenups.

It should be treated like a man hitting his women, verbal domestic violence should not be accepted.
It doesn't need to be. A man getting angry and shouting at his wife is exactly equivalent to hen pecking. In the former though, it is seen as an abusive act by violent man, whereas the latter is seen as fairly normal.
[–]Entropy-7Old Goat-1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Women's groups make a big deal out of men being emotional or psychological "abusers". They overplay that card especially in light of this.
The panic attack a guy has when his women does this to him is because he feels trapped, like he is not allowed to respond because it will make things worse. Being assertive with a bit of finesse is all that is needed.
I contrast this with my experience in the military, basic training and junior leadership. If your bed sheet fold was off by an inch you got royally shit all over.

And in the end it made you a stronger and better-rounded person.
Yes, but the context was completely different. There was an established hierarchy based on experience, knowledge, capability and demonstrated performance. Instructions were clear and concise (in the above example, in others you are expected to improvise, adapt and overcome; or you are specifically given Kobyashi Maru type shit tests).
And I didn't want to fuck my drill sergeant or have him living in the barracks with me.

I grew up with a mother like this-- and it wasn't just my dad who was on the receiving end-- so I've grown up insanely aware of how I behave in my own relationships. If anything I can be diplomatic and helpful to the point of getting taken advantage of, but 18 years of being screamed at and berated over minutiae (ever gotten the silent treatment for a week for hanging a towel in the wrong place? Ever had silverware thrown at you because you washed it wrong? Try dealing with that as an 8-year-old) will do that to a person. Several of my siblings have been in therapy dealing with perfectionist and self-loathing tendencies because of it... I've been able to process and work through it on my own, but I worry about them. "Unintentional" emotional abuse is very real.
And shout-out to /r/raisedbynarcissists if anyone else is dealing with similar shit.

I've read this a while ago and I realized that I grew up with a father who was exactly like this as well. I experienced a lot of similar situations that you described.
The biggest turning point had to be my first summer home from college. My parents were divorced at this point and I was suppose to stay at my Dad's place for half the summer and my Mom's for the other half. I started the summer at my dad's. I was working a summer job and got a phone call during one of my shifts from him in a blind rage. Apparently, there was a drop of pee on the toilet seat. He spent 20 minutes chewing me out before telling me that I was no longer welcome at his house any more.
I knew this was an obvious bluff but i simply told him "ok" and hung up. When I got to his place to pick up my stuff he kept telling me that I was still allowed to stay there, but never apologized for his actions. That was 5 years ago and I havent spent a night there since.
[–]ArthurMacArthur 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, my mom wasn't like this to the point that she was abusive, but Jesus fucking Christ, I got sick and tired of being picked at about the "right" way to do stuff. To this very day, she still frets about the fact that although I have a successful career, happy marriage, happy and healthy and smart kids, et al et al, I still make decisions about things in what she thinks is the "wrong" way. They may be the right decisions! But I don't come to them the way she thinks I should! And the right decisions made for the wrong reasons are just as bad as making the wrong decisions!
It is absolutely infuriating, and as a result, I don't give a flying fuck how anybody else chooses to run their life. I don't care what Mr. Arthur feeds the kids for dinner or how he does laundry or how he manages his career. He's a responsible adult and I trust him to be able to function as a human being without my having to micromanage him. And as for literally everybody else in the universe (except my kids, who need some micromanagement by virtue of their age), I do not give one single shit what they do. Not my problem.

I grew up with a mother who was extremely manipulative, like her everyday normal state of being.i don't even know if she's conscious of it anymore, it's just what's he does. It taught me to always be consciously aware of how I acted in relationships, like now I'm hyper aware of avoiding being manipulative at all costs. It's a shame sometimes we have to learn these basic "treat others well" behaviors by seeing others go through them.

This post is exactly why we tell women on RPWives to consider their words and attitudes carefully. I sometimes challenge users to try a week long experiment where they only say positive or supportive things when talking to their SO/H. The idea being that it helps them gain some awareness about how they state things, and possibly realize how they can be unnecessarily critical. There's another post and common piece of advice that simply says "STFU." A lot of people mistake that to mean "never have a thought of your own" or "always agree, no matter what." Both are incorrect exaggerations.
People are creatures of habits. If you establish productive, healthy, fulfilling habits - then you are reinforcing good tendencies in your life. It can be hard to change certain bad habits, and in some cases, people don't even realize they have a particular bad habit. Being critical/condescending/assuming your way is the best way are common issues that many users have to come to terms with. Sometimes it's a slow process, sometimes it's a fast one.
I love the description of 'light bulb' that the article uses by the way. Realizing the existence of something you were previously (for all intents and purposes) entirely 'blind' to.
Overall this is a great article and a good resource overall.

I was attempting to highlight this in my post here.
I've come to the realization that even play passive-aggressive behavior, while lots of fun and even a net positive, can go south and become actual passive-aggressive behavior really fast just due to the comfort one has developed with operating in that way.

I agree with what everything you have said here (I'll read the source material after I send this). I've noticed the same thing with sarcasm as well. It's not across the board, and some people can utilize these things without experiencing any problems within their relationship...but I see so many examples of how easily that can go wrong.

Controlling women like that simply want to be put in their place. It's just another kind of shit test. She wants her husband to tell her fuck off and show her who the boss is.
[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I concur. I think a big part of that behavior comes from the frustration of having married a pushover.

it's a mistake to think that sort of abuse is specific to gender. if the genders were switched y'all RP and RPW would probably be talking about how its her fault for messing up.
red pillers, do any of you consider this psychological abuse?
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
would probably be talking about how its her fault for messing up.
No I wouldn't. And let's be real here. This type of behavior is much much more common in one gender than it is the other. There are entire TV shows dedicated to this trope.
if the genders were switched y'all RP and RPW would probably be talking about how its her fault for messing up.
If the genders were reversed, I'd be calling the man a little bitch for causing lots of drama where no drama is warranted.

Yes, and it doesn't matter which gender does it. You should be able to feel safe, relaxed and de-stressed around your S.O. If you do not feel that way when with a S.O., something is wrong.
As for your statement about gender, this kind of behavior (constant nagging and perfectionist tendencies) seems to be something women do more than men. Men have their own faults, but I do not really see them being the primary gender who acts like this.
If you read the article, even the author herself talks about this kind of behavior being something women do more than men.
[–]Entropy-7Old Goat1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The article has the woman conceding that her husband lets it slide when she fucks up.
Sure, some guys - even a lot of guys - are high strung and peak out at their women over small things. However, that is not RP: that is called breaking frame.
[–]VermiciousKnidzz 1 points1 points1 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
honestly RP dudes are the most condescending people to women i've ever seen.
Yes, but the flip side is that we don't freak out at mistakes because we manage expectations.

Women actually get a high off of power struggles. It's why they become nagging shrews en masse once they marry while men spend their marriages walking on eggshells.
The woman who wrote this wanted her husband to fight with her. She wanted the days-long rush that goes with it. Men hate it because they don't get the same high. They let it go as soon as fight-or-flight subsides.
This is also why men tend to forgive their friends and move on from fights more easily than women.
This is a bit extreme, I know plenty of women who have much more egalitarian marriages. They don't get "high" off power struggles with their husbands. Some people are more controlling than others. Tbh, I don't know that it's that gender specific. In my marriage my husband is more concerned about little things like how do do household chores "correctly", than I am. Than again, I don't berate him incessantly when he does something in a way I would do differently (other than the dryer, that man isn't safe with a dryer, he puts everything in it, we've had several household items melt because of his insistence that anything can be dried in the dryer).

There was a discussion about nagging with reference to The Submitted Woman book. This is sort of an extension of the points I was making there about being picky and micromanaging.
In the first example in that article my initial thought was "Look bitch, if you didn't want "hamburger" meat then don't ask for hamburger meat; if you want "lean ground beef" or "extra lean ground beef" then say so."
Then again, I've spent years living on my own, doing my own shopping as well as my own cooking such that I know there is a specific difference in the way grocery stores label their ground beef. If they call it "hamburger", it is the lowest quality and highest fat content.
And of course, I would be more tactful in explaining this failure of communication if it ever happened at all (because I would buy the lean ground beef anyways despite the higher cost).
I always go full Gordon Ramsey while cooking or if stuff has to do with food.
"This ground beef is so fatty it could be your ass!"
With only a two glaring exceptions (one LTR was actually studying hospitality management, and another just didn't like a lot of food that I do) I do the shopping and cooking. The GF play sous chef (if necessary) and dishwasher (almost always).
