It's the same childish shit that women who want to hurt a guy but don't know anything about him have always done. Pre-1995 it was 'You're a virgin', then it was 'You have a little dick' for like 20 years, now this. And to be fair I'm sure there's an equivalent 'go-to' phrase that some guys use, although none come to mind.

I just hate how when people [guys and girls] lose an argument they resort to name calling and just saying the most hurtful shit they can muster in the moment, as if it helps make their argument valid or drives their point home.

In regards to name calling during an discussion, I believe it boils down to intelligence.

People who resort to name calling during an discussion do so to inflict pain of some sort on the other party. There is no other reason for name calling.
Someone willing to inflict pain on another person in the midst of a discussion isn't willing to hear the other party out, much less be willing to change their mind.
That unwillingness comes from (1) being to fragile to accept the idea that you may be wrong about something or (2) you're unable to separate yourself from the argument on a personal level. Basically you identify with part or all of your point of view and anything that counters that is perceived as a personal attack.

Assuming the name caller is 'drawing first blood', resorting to it because your argument has run out of steam [ego], or because you feel personally attacked [ignorance] by the other person's point of view, is a sign of intellectual weakness, immaturity and disrespect for the other party.

That goes double for relationships. You should both have a vested interest in growing the relationship, not tearing it down. That means working together. Not working independently to change the other person. Assuming both parties are good-faith actors, no one should ever resort to name calling, especially during a disagreement. Arguments are necessary in a healthy relationship but should only occur between two people who genuinely want to work together to resolve an issue. Not simply to change the other persons mind or control their behavior. Once an argument devolves in to name calling it's over, no ones won, no one is happy and no progress was made. At that point you have to ask yourself if the person who resorted to name calling wants to be in a relationship, or be in control of a relationship. Regardless of the answer, you need to figure out two things.

Are they an ignorant good-faith actor in the relationship, or are they an egotistical bad-faith actor in the relationship?
Do you want to be with that type of person or find someone else?
