And thus begins the cycle: Greed vs Sexism.

"Patriarchy" and "privilege" are this era's equivalents of the "original sin". For all the progress humanity has achieved, some things just will not change.

I literally had a friend who once told me "If your not a feminist we cant be friends". This wasnt a shot at me cause I was saying something, it was just related to the topic at hand and she was generalizing. So I told her I believe in equal rights for men and women but I think Modern Day Feminism is blown way out of proportion." She replied by telling me it wasnt, and that she was a walking example because at her job she got paid less than her male co worker who does the same job and started after she started just because shes a girl. I immediately told her (because shes a close friend, I wouldn't immediately assume shes lying) "Oh shit really? Ok then lets do something about it. Lets contact the Dept of Labor or something. Def get you a lawyer. I can PROMISE you your boss is going to lose this."
Suddenly the issue wasnt as big of a deal and "no theres no need its unnecessary its fine its no big deal nothing will change anyway....etc etc etc....Havnt talked to her since honestly cause at that point I just felt differently about her and couldnt help but believe she was lying to play victim.

I have to deal with that shit, times 10. South American modern day feminism is awful. I get told on a daily basis how privileged I am for being a man. "you sure you are okay going back on a bike to your house at 1 am? Oh yes... You're a man. It's different" "you went on a trip alone? You crazy. But you're a man. We girls can't do that. And you hitch hiked? See? Men are privileged" I got told a few times that we men are HUNTING women. And that a femicide occurs around once every 8 minutes in my 40mil population country. Just madness

Regardless of your own situation, let's not pretend the latin world is on the same part as most northern civilisations. And this is coming from a someone with roots in both worlds, having lived in both.
Sure you may be in contact with some crazies, but women in latin countries do have it way worse compared to women in northern countries.
In spain or italy, for example, millions still regard women as lesser. Why do I say that? Because of the parties who let out statements like in regard to that statement and a fucking big part of 'em votes for those parties. People say the shittiest things and it's way too accepted, like the (italian) lawyer who said his client didn't rape her, because she's too ugly. No way in hell that shit happens in nothern countries. And don't get me fucking started on South America. The latin world is miles behind when it comes to equality.
[–]adrian2903 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well, let's agree to disagree my friend. I'm from Argentina, have a lot of lady friends who are not into the modern feminist bullshit, and we all agree equality it's pretty much here. In fact, we are dealing with a lot of double standards lately where women can do shit men can't or there'd be an outcry
[–]Assonfire 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's fair. We can agree to disagree.
I do wish to state that I'm not saying women are second rate citizens everywhere in the "latin world", but the difference between that world and the northern one is really out there. And I do understand the latin women better.
That being said, so-called "progressive people" do fuck it up for everyone, almost everywhere. The middle ground seems more and more lost with every passing day.
Cheers for your opinion.

She is someone who believes in the fake wage gap bullshit, even though time and time again it has proven to be false. Believes that it is highly likely she will be harmed in some way if she walks alone at night which is also false if she isn't stupid about it.
Rapists don't roam around cities looking for random victims, they are 9 times out of 10 someone you know, and thieves don't rob people on brightly lit streets with others around, in low crime areas.
Yeah, she wants to claim 'victimhood status' while being about as safe as you can be for the average person.

[–]FocusZero 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
What about the other comment? You don’t think being paid less for the same job is discrimination? If it’s illegal to actually discriminate, then why is it so common with no consequences? You are choosing sides. Why are they paid less? Actually why? For all jobs. Yes there are some women that are paid the same or more. But why are the majority of women Paid less for the same job titles? Does that not scream discrimination to you?
[–]Arturiki 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You don’t think being paid less for the same job is discrimination?
Yes I do, as long as we are talking about exactly the same position, with same requirements, experience and responsibilities and within a reasonable salary range. Of course is discrimination.
then why is it so common with no consequences?
Because people do not give a shit, are scared or do not own enough money to pay an attorney to sue the company.
Why are they paid less? Actually why? For all jobs.
What do you actually mean? Do you have some nice statistical data where you find that every single woman is being discriminated in salary at every job?
But why are the majority of women Paid less for the same job titles? Does that not scream discrimination to you?
Same answer as before. Plus, job title is not the same as same position, experience and ability. If that was the case, then again, I agree that would be discrimination.
It IS the case. Women CEOs are paid less than the male that held the office before them. Actors are paid less money for the same roles. Women in tech and engineering jobs get paid less than male counterparts in the same role.

The first link did not state how they are measuring the gap so I cannot comment about it. The third one links to how they measure it and seems more reasonable. Of course it is quite difficult to measure, but let's agree that the USA is fucked assuming that is true. I rejected the cookies of Forbes and it is taking ages "to process".
Nice assumptions you got there, pal. I never mentioned anything like that, so chill. If the USA has a pay gap, then it is fucked up and you should fight it, but also women has to stand up and say "ey, give me the money I deserve".
Cheers too.

But we do all know people who love to make drama and be the victim whenever possible.
Yes it’s a generation to say ‘people like her’, but I don’t know if ‘due process for the accused’ is a guaranteed right in Reddit comments.
TBH one thing we are all generalizing is that the person may have been a him, not a her.
The person in the OP may not be ‘like that’ but is kinda parroting what they hear without thinking about it or even being actionable about it. I’d also like to point out that men are not safe walking home at night either. When I was a young woman there were many nights I walked home and I was never bothered. It was very stupid but we all felt safe. The only person who got attacked was my male friend got jumped while walking home late from work by a group of guys just out to be assholes to someone.
All of that is fair. I also would say that this is a snippet of a conversation that no one here was part of. And reddit of all places is best as leaving out context.
As a rule, I don’t usually post my opinions about things. Mostly just comments that are meant to be amusing or factual things. I mean I post on D&D boards and beekeeping mostly. I am unconcerned about how this was received. I really was curious as to the though process behind the calling out. I have heard a lot of good things. Idk, I know people should be paid equal but when you look at like people who build houses. A man can lets say lift 8 bricks at once and a women only 4 bricks. Isn't it normal that a man gets paid a little extra in a job like that. I know its bullshit for jobs like teacher or something but when they get paid equal in the building sector should a man work slower so at the end of the day he moved the same ammount of bricks as the women?

Yeah but for some jobs a men just preforms better when you need muscles for the job. In those cases I agree a man should be paid a little more. But for jobs like teacher or other non-heavy task jobs they should be paid equal i agree.
[+]FocusZero -26 points-25 points-24 points 6 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
So you are only half misogynistic. Well done. I understood what you were saying. I just think you need to think about what you are saying. One statement completely invalidates the other. It’s either all or nothing. Thinking like yours is why there isn’t equal pay to begin with. Because sometime men are just “better”. Im not telling you that your beliefs are wrong, I am asking you to pick a side.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I actually agree with what the other guy is saying, and I don’t think he’s even directly disagreeing with you.
Basically what he is saying is that pay should be performance based. In some cases that would mean that a man will be paid more if he performs the job better. Isn’t that fair?
I’m not looking to antagonise, I genuinely think it’s an interesting line of discussion.
[+]FocusZero -7 points-6 points-5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think it’s interesting for sure. I think it’s probably not doable on a large scale. I don’t think most men would take less pay if there was a profession that people decided women do better than men 90% of the time. There would be an uproar. I think that line of thinking is where this all started. It’s why we didn’t allow women to vote for a long time. I think it correlates to a lot of other issues.
I don’t think you are antagonizing. I wasn’t trying to either, though my tone was definitely not the greatest. I just don’t see a way to enact this type of thinking in a way that works.
This is probably not the right sub to ask those questions on certainly. That’s my mistake. But I appreciate the explanation
[–]JoeJoegamR 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Each work field is different.
Laborers are usually contractors. The more you do the more you're paid. It is pretty simple
Teachers are complicated. You can go off the basic test scores- but what of they are teaching mentally disabled? What of they are in an area where violence is high? How would you justify how much % to put into each area.
There are fields where women are seen to be paid more, like teaching, like elderly care. Men are typically better at physical jobs.
If women are able to be paid less for the exact same work, I 100% would only hire women if I was a business owner. As I get more work done for the same money.
Also, women aged 20-30 are actually paid more than men for the same age bracket for the same job. After college. This could be due to a bias in the hiring process. I personally think it should all be done anon, therefore you can't say they didn't hire you due to _______. It should be based purely on merit.
[–]JaspeR350 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
It isn't that rare what i'm saying, jobs were man preform better man could be paid more. I dont say they have to be paid more. But for jobs like teacher where a man or women preform the exact same they should be paid equal.
[+]yomamasamilf -12 points-11 points-10 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Are there jobs that you think women would outperform men?
[–]FocusZero -4 points-3 points-2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Absolutely. Any tech/IT job, engineering, science, or medical field. Studies show women are better suited at higher level positions as well (CEO and COO). Plenty of labor intensive jobs, education, law and certain jobs in the military.
I think we live in a country that grew up telling each other that women are less than. I think we are institutionalized to think that way. We call people pussies when they aren’t being “manly”. We didn’t allow women to vote for years because it “wasn’t their place”. We somehow or another decided that men are better.
I would bet that women are better suited than men in about 90% of the jobs out there. It’s not a popular opinion on this sub. Or a lot of places on the internet. Anytime a woman has an opinion we shut them down because that’s what you have learned growing up. That there need to stay in their lane.
Would you be willing to take less money at your job if society determined that women are better at it than you are?
[–]yomamasamilf -5 points-4 points-3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's refreshing to hear. I'm actually a woman lol. I definitely agree that men could perform better in many physical jobs, but usually the intents behind those comments are rather ill, so its great to hear your well thought out response.

No, I am asking you to continue your point. If you are unable to do so or unwilling to that’s on you. I want YOU to explain it because you asked me if I was stupid.
The thing about gravity is that it pretty easy to explain that it is real. There are hundreds of thousands of extremely smart people who have posted papers and theories that prove its real.
Would you care to elaborate on your opinion at all? If not that’s cool.
[–]Painonabun 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So you’re saying I could be terrible at my job but still shouldn’t be fired but rather,be paid as much as someone who does the job well?okay
How am I saying that? That how you interpreted it. All I’m saying is that if you are equally effective at your job and hold he same position, for the same work, with the same title, and the same length at the company, you should be paid the same. Which is not the case typically.
I could have written that differently. I could have said “all things being equal”. But that not true for most of the workforce. Things are not equal.
This clearly isn’t the sub to have this conversation on. Again, that’s my mistake. But if you would care to share your feelings on the matter I’d love to hear them. Everything I said is something I’d love to hear the other side to. I’m not attempting to be a troll or be controversial.

It's actually legal to pay someone less in the US because you think they'll be less productive.
This is a loophole that needs to be fixed.
[–]SleepDeprivedUserUK 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Wrong, that is perfectly fine.
If you do the same work, to the same quality, you should get the same pay.
If you hire two people, one of whom does an exemplary job, and the other who does a barely passable one, they should not be paid the same; it drags down the motivation of the harder/more skilled worker, and does nothing to motivate the barely passable worker.
The OP however is correct, it's illegal to discriminate, based on things like skin colour, not on work ethic, which I agree with.
[–]TheAsriel78 -3 points-2 points-1 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Most kidnapping and rapes are not done by strangers, but rather friends or acquaintances.

[+]They_Call_Me_L -13 points-12 points-11 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

[–]RoXBiX 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
No, they wouldn't. I can clearly see you have never been in any kind of altercation/fight. Your generalization is false, so let's get rid of that right off the bat. Secondly, it was explained to you that a bigger man will beat a smaller man (and as someone who has been doing boxing for numerous years and can confirm) unless the smaller man has some kind of an equalizer, for example, a great grasp of martial arts/a weapon. Same is with females. A martial artist female can be 2 times smaller and knock out a bigger guy without a problem. The point is - if you think you're at risk of getting attacked, start carrying a pepperspray for example, or learn martial arts. If you don't do any of those things and expect to make it through the world without a scratch you live an illusion.
[–]They_Call_Me_L -3 points-2 points-1 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Can you explain why my generalisation is wrong?

Google the average height differences between males and females and you'll see that the average height difference is minor (5 to max 10cm). Even in the United States, the height difference is about 10cm, regardless of the races that are involved. So, not much difference there. Let's move on. The average weight difference between males and females in the US was about 10kg. This means that if you have at least an amateur grasp of martial arts you'll be able to defend yourself, as a female, against a male who does not have any experience whatsoever and is your regular street guy. Everything a woman needs to be able to defend herself (in most cases) is readily available for her. Her job is only to learn that stuff (or buy self-defense devices).

You're switching the argument here. It shouldn't be anyone's job to protect himself, but we do not live in an ideal world, and the sooner you accept that the easier it will be for you. And I'm not a yank.

Criminal nowadays don't fuck around. This ain't Westside Story where gangs carry switchblades. Even 12 year olds are running around with Berettas and Glocks. [+]They_Call_Me_L -7 points-6 points-5 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
A gun doesn't help anyone. They should be avoided at all costs. Your police force can help, but yours is pretty shit, if everything I've heard about them is true. Honestly? I've never been mugged so I don't know what you'd do in that situation. But thinking a gun will save you is stupid.
[–]ogr27 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
If, hypothetically, you tried to mug someone at knifepoint, and they suddenly pulled out a loaded 9mil pistol and pointed it at you, how would act?
[–]They_Call_Me_L 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I'd be wondering why I didn't stab them immediately once I saw them reach for something. If they managed to do it without me seeing, while they're infront of me? I'm a shitty mugger.
[–]ogr27 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Say you did stab them, somehow getting close enough to do that without them noticing AT ALL and somehow seeing them move their hand to their holster, do you really think that one stab with a knife is enough to completely incapacitate a person that's doped up on adrenaline, and now also has a gun that they can easily point at your body, still probably quite open because of you stabbing them taking a lot of effort?
See, that's the problem with your hypothetical. Where the fuck am I if not front of someone when I'm mugging them? Am I shouting at them from my apartment window while they aim at me with their Browning .50cal?
[–]ogr27 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If you're in front of them then you had to somehow get in front of them, meaning they saw you coming straight at them holding your knife. Even if they didn't see that it's a knife, you probably wouldn't be doing this in the day or in a public place, so all they would see is a person coming straight at them, in the night, holding or hiding something in their hand. If you think that wouldn't be suspicious then you need to be more aware of your surroundings. Also, not all guns are spooky scary machine miniguns that have heat-seeking bullets able to let you take down an airplane without even aiming at it. A small 9 mil pistol is very easy to actually conceal, hard to notice on one's person, and can incapacitate you completely with just a couple of shots, especially considering the fact that the mag can hold more than a couple of shots, you wouldn't want to fuck with that.

I don't think that conceal and carry is something most can do. After all, in most countries guns cannot be carried freely if you are allowed to own them at all. Btw, does every woman need to learn how to use a gun and buy one just to feel safe? Doesn't seem like the optimal solution here. You also need to consider that not every place is unsafe as she makes it seem. As a woman you defenitely might have to think about learning self defence in general as you are going to be harassed or attacked by assholes in more often comparison to men, though again, it might also depend on where you are. In some places you have a higher chance of being attacked as a man.

You don't need to be a criminal to shoot somebody. If you can become a criminal after legally obtaining a gun. And no, criminals don't have guns where I live. Sure the most serious criminals do, but a lot of criminals use less lethal weapons.
[–]kaolin224 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Less lethal weapons in the hands of people who intend to commit violent crime sounds like an oxymoron.
So what, would you thank the criminal for only stabbing you or cracking your skull with a club?
"Thanks for not shooting me tonight, I really appreciate it. Would you mind calling an ambulance for me, I need to keep pressure on this hole in my abdomen. "
I also like your sliding scale of violent crime from regular criminals to serious ones. I don't think there's a difference if you're about to become a victim.
[+]Tri_cep -7 points-6 points-5 points 6 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Firstly, carrying a knife, or any other lethal weapon in a public should also be illegal if it's not used as a tool. Secondly, firearms are able to cause damage much faster than a knife and also from a distance. So there's much more potential for injury/death with a gun than a knife, even though knives can be lethal too.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Guns' primary purpose is not only for an individual to directly protect his right to life, his right to property and his right to his home, but also as insurance against tyranical government. And before you say that the government has tanks and bombs, think how well that worked against guerilla warfare in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq etc.

You should watch this video: https://youtu.be/t9xJejkInvE
By your definition of "lethal weapon", we'd also have to consider credit cards, ball point pens, keys, batteries, and hundreds of other things.
Most violent crime happens up close. You're not going to be mugged or assaulted from 25 yards away. That's a straight up assassination or murder.
I also think you underestimate how fast damage can be done to you in a short amount of time. It's actually a benefit for you to inflict maximum damage as fast as possible, or have the perceived threat of being able to do so.
[–]Tri_cep -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I don't know what that video proves... Yeah, you can cut meat with a card. Guess what? I can bite someone in the throat and kill them. [–]Tri_cep 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, anybody can bite someone in the throat and kill them. If we use the logic that you can kill someone with a credit card. If there was a mandatory training, it would be less risky, but I still don't think it would be worth it.

It's not a solution for all violent crime. To solve that problem we'll have to take a hard look at social issues that make people very uncomfortable, especially in our current political climate.
But a gun can solve your particular instance of violent crime immediately if you have one and you're trained to use it. You may not even have to fire a shot.
There's a subreddit called r/dgu that stands for Defensive Gun Use. They have videos of people of all backgrounds using their firearms to prevent themselves from becoming a statistic.
You saying you don't have a problem walking down a street at night because of your size is hubris. You could just as easily become a victim because the assault could come in many forms. I wonder how much your size would intimidate three motivated thugs with baseball bats.
A firearm evens the playing field because there's no more effective long range weapon and anyone can use it to deadly effect if they know how.

Violent crime of all types has been steadily dropping for 40 years. People are safer now than they've ever been. And when you look at homicides, most are drug or gang related. So as long as you're not associated with either of those your odds drop even further.
But, this is the world we live in. If you're afraid, be prepared to defend yourself. What's the best way to do that? A gun.

Or learn to fight. One of the best kung fu people I ever saw was a chick. Fast too. Plus, if some asshole is planning on assaulting her, he'll totally underestimate her.
Not a bad idea, but getting good enough to defend against anyone on the street would take many years while a gun is only a few hundred dollars and a safety course away

I get it, she’s choosing to complain about being a female rather than embrace it.
But I conceal carry and I’m still scared to be out by myself at night. Don’t think carrying will take away the fear of still being approached. And still, the idea of even having to defend myself and shoot someone is somehow MORE scary.

Thank you. Also, I recommend a concealed melee weapon or a spray, not a firearm. Firearm incidents seldom go well for whoever holds the gun, but if you wave a knife or spray to scare someone, in my experience, it works better to deter, as most will assume a firearm isn't loaded, a problem which knives don't have and sprays rarely have.

Why the hell would any rational person assume a gun isn’t loaded
[–]that_egyptian_guy 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
A knife and pepper spray can easily be used against you

Same with a gun, irrelevant.

ALWAYS assume that a firearm is loaded.
[–]Faladorable 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
even if you know for a fact it is not loaded, assume it’s loaded

This has been proven not true. It does happen, but odds are the bad guy won't be able to take it from you.

First off, a knife requires I'm within arms reach to use, and sprays have shown to be hit or miss in terms of effectiveness.
Second, in what fucking realm would a person, good, bad, or otherwise, assume a gun is unloaded? Because why would anyone carry an unloaded gun?
