Are age gap relationships becoming more common?

I dont think so. I think majority of Americans marry in their age group give or take a couple years. The reason for the post are probably b/c majority of people are not in large age gaps so when people are in one they look for “validation” that their relationship isnt weird.

Now that I think about it, i feel like age gap outside of Hollywood is less common though. Like in the 60s/70s they were more common because women did no really have a place like that in the work force. There were much more stay at home wives and b/c of security a lot of them would marry older men. I dont think anyone though much of age gaps

Now I dont see that many people 15/20 years apart. I think people assume (if the man is older) that the woman is a gold digger or sugar baby

I don’t think so? Although the “sugar baby” movement seems to have become a thing which I personally find quite gross!

I don’t think it’s becoming more prevalent. I just think with the internet, those relationships tend to stick out more. I agree with the other commenter that age gap relationships tend to have more problems in general, which is why you’ll see them represented more on the relationship subs and AITA.

IME, most people date/marry people within about 5 years of them. Beyond that is far more rare. And I’ve been in multiple age gap relationships - they don’t normally just “happen” outside of certain spaces.

It's the internet. Oddities get attention. It's no more prevalent than it has always been. That said, as the TRP Master Blaster of age gap relationships, I can offer the following:

Most young women (say 50%, but I will also say that the numbers are entirely speculative), want a guy near their own age - like plus/minus 4 years, and that's it. Everything else is "grody" or whatever the kids say.

Another 25%-35% will be open to the "right" older man - think Matthew McConaughey or the young Harrison Ford - but otherwise basically want what the first group wants.

The remaining 15-25% actively prefer an older man, because we tend to have things under control, aren't going to get jealous or fly off the handle for no reason, aren't going to go get hammered on the regular, etc. Calm, thoughtful leadership is the order of the day. IOW, we are "finished products".

For most of the latter group "older" means 10-12 year older. They also tend to keep it on the down low because they get shamed for it by their sisters in groups 1 and 2.

So men, generally, are attracted to women in their early 20s. I didn't make the rules - go argue with God or nature or whomever. Women (see chart) are attracted to men near their own age, until things get cougar-y in their 50s.

This has everything to do with reproduction. In economic terms, women have excess reproductive capacity and men have excess labor capacity. IOW, men can provide everything for themselves, except children. Thus women have a single, but powerful, trump card: "Want an heir? HA! You have to come to us for one!" It's a fair point, but assuming that a man has built himself into smth, he may well be able to. This is why we say, on TRP, that men are born with nothing and die with everything, and for women it's the opposite. Ultimately, everyone cuts their own deal in life.

It's not common, most people I know are with in a couple years of their partner one way or another.

I'm almost 14 years younger than my husband and people have harassed me all the time for our age difference.

We have adult age children now - and people still snark about our relationship. But we've been married for 16 years.

It has always been possible for super high value men (Elvis) to obtain an inappropriately young virgin spouse. There are many more high profile examples and I’m absolutely sure there are countless low profile examples.

The world has changed pretty fast on this count. I don’t know any parents today who would shrug and sell their child to a rich man.

That said, it really wasn’t that long ago that these things happened and in some circles it still happens and people might be weird about acknowledging that you might be part of that.

Well if you’re seeing more posts about them, that means you’re probably seeing more problems about them…. Which means they’re not working as well as non-age gap couples lol.

I don’t think that’s a sign they’re on the rise. Look around your social circle. Are most people significantly different in age from their partners?

Of my married fiends I know a couple who is 30 and 26, one who is 31 and 24, then the rest are mostly close in age.

I’ve noticed that usually in age gap relationships when the man is older (which is the more common type), the man is usually not dating anyone that he’s known from his youth, and the relationship usually starts after the man is around 28ish. I’ve observed that most people date and marry someone they’ve known from their late childhood. Like someone they’ve known since before they turn 18.

There are never any guarantees in life. Dr. Robert Atkins slipped on black ice stepping off a curb walking to work in NYC and died of a brain concussion. We can only be responsible for our own actions. I am very thankful for my wife, and a chance at some youthful feeling time with a woman that truly loves me for who I am. I am intellectual, conservative, religious but not churchy, political, a lover of fine arts (at the ballet last week). I successfully take excellent care of my health. My wife is a pediatrics nurse in a big city at one of the nation's largest children's hospitals. She was a widow 10 years when we met 2 1/2 yrs ago. I will not cheat on her, and I make her very happy every day. And vice versa. I promised myself a number of years ago that I never again be with/live with a women who didn't love me for who I was, and to whom I didn't matter in the relationship as an equal. I've kept that promise.

I make sure I am a "hitting on all cylinders" human being/male as much as I can. Physically I've been a high sexual desire male since puberty hit in the first place. Totally okay if a woman doesn't wanna live with that. It's my choice not to live feeling rejected as a way of life. My wife actually said maybe early last year, "I thought I was only gonna get to read about having a sex life like this. I never thought I'd get to have one." I am kind and loving by nature. I'm also strong, athletic, and very intense in physical intimacy. I'd compromise with less that an average frequency of daily plus, but I don't have to. She's very happy. At times it seems maybe daunting given that I turn 70 next September. But I could hardly be more thankful to have her. And she of me. I do believe we will last. We run a guesthouse together (4 boarders). Rent a single family home. I do the property mngt and maintenance. I truly hope to give her another solid 10 years of vibrancy, maybe more. My brother and I look like we're from different generations. She's getting a hysterectomy next month, typical fibroids. Life happens. She turned 51 in Jan. I believe we'll beat the odds. :))
