Hi ladies, I’m new here so please let me know if I’m breaking any rules.

After reading several posts on here, I feel like I am starting to get a better mindset and outlook on relationships: what I can offer in one, and what I should look for.

However, my problem— a very common one— is getting noticed in the first place.

I’m a freshman in college, and I have plenty of opportunities to go out and meet people, but I tend to notice a trend of men going after my friends and not me. I see two reasons for this:

  1. I’m not very attractive

a) I have acne. Very bad acne. I’ve had it since 5th grade and both my siblings went on accutane because they had it even worse than me. I’ve tried every treatment under the sun, and I finally decided to resort to accutane. I have my second appointment with my dermatologist on Monday and I should be getting my first round of treatment soon. However, accutane takes about 5-6 months to fully clear up the skin. So this one is a work in progress.

b) I have braces. My parents couldn’t afford to get them for me until my junior year, and I had a whole slew of complications that will result in me needing braces for another 8 months at the very least, according to my orthodontist.

c) I am very plain looking. Long, straight light brown hair, outward arching nose. I don’t stand out and I’m not great at applying makeup, which is something I’m trying to improve on. I can’t seem to find a hairstyle that works for me.

d) Fitness. I used to be very fit— I ran cross country and exercised every day. Now, I’m so busy with school that I don’t have much time to work out. I’m not fat, but I have a bit of a belly. Also, in typical college life fashion, my diet could be much better.

e) Clothes. I’ve always been very introverted and not very good at making friends with other women. I’ve mostly fixed my problem with meeting other women in college, but I missed out on a crucial learning point in my life on how to dress and act feminine. Growing up only around boys, my wardrobe consists of hoodies and sweatpants. I have zero fashion sense. I have plenty of money saved up to spend on cute clothes, but I have no idea where to start.

f) Dancing. I frequently go out with my friends to dances, but I just kind of try to sway in time with the music and I can’t just let go and have fun. All my friends say that they’re terrible dancers, yet even when they’re doing “bad” dance moves, they’re having so much fun that it doesn’t matter, and guys love dancing with them. How can I break out of my comfort zone and be better at dancing?

  1. I’m socially awkward. Trying to work on this but it’s very difficult. I don’t know how to stand comfortably, I shift around a lot and I can’t pose in a confident yet relaxed manner. I stumble over my words and because of my braces, I’m embarrassed to even smile.

I know my biggest problem is insecurity and low confidence. Whenever you meet someone, they can immediately pick up on this, and I think this is why men don’t notice me. I can cover up most of my acne with makeup, and I know braces aren’t as noticeable as I tend to think they are, but it is painfully obvious that I’m not comfortable in my own skin.

How can I improve on my self confidence while I wait to get my braces off and for accutane to clear up my acne? I feel like I’m in limbo and I can’t improve until I get these issues fixed. I’d love to get noticed when I go out with my friends, I’d love to have a nice conversation with a cute guy and get someone’s number for once.

Here’s my questions for you:

  • How can I start learning to be more confident despite my braces and acne?

  • What are some tips on how to be more confident and relaxed in social situations? How do you stand or sit without looking awkward?

  • What is some fashion advice for cute, casual clothes, particularly for the upcoming winter season? (I live in the Midwest so I need clothes that I can wear when I’m walking to class through the snow).

  • How can I become more relaxed at dances, and what are some general tips for being better at dancing?

TL;DR Acne, braces, socially awkward, and low self confidence: the whole shebang. How do I become more confident and get guys to notice me while I work on improving how I look?
